How do you use the ranging function on a Leupold vari x III 3.5-10x?

I have had a Leupold vari x III 3.5-10x scope for years, but I bought the scope and the gun under it used so I never had a manual for it.

I know that there is a way to use the reticle and the power adjustments for ranging, but I don't know how. I went to the Leupold website, if the info is there I simply could not find it.

Can anybody here tell me how to use it for ranging purposes?

Thanks!

It depends on the reticle of course. If it's a mildot reticle, then there's heaps of info on how to use it.

If it's a duplex reticle, then it will be a cruder technique, dependent on what the reticle subtends.

So, whatcha got?

Duplex?

If it is a duplex then put the top of the bottom post on the bottom of the deers body; use the dial that changes the "power" and adjust until the crosshair is on the top of the deers back. Without anymore adjustment look at the power setting convert that to yards and that is the distance. So at a 3X setting the deer is at 300 yards. When the deer finishes yawning shoot him:)=

I believe the reticle subtends 18 inches.

You could of course find out at www.leupold.com or whatever.

HOWEVER as I have told many "eastern" hunters on their westeren adventures, if you are shooting a 300 WM or 7 Mag or something similar your first shot better be in the middle because distances always look farther than they are accross the canyons etc. Guess what? They shoot over the animal almost all the time. Most claimed 500 yard shots are really less than 300 yards.

Good pratice is to walk around with a range finder and guess at distances then fire the range finder and see how you do. Sort of like stump shooting with a bow.
