How do you use a round pierced patch?

I can't help it. I know it's a dumb question but I don't know of a better way of getting the answer. (I shoot on my own property and don't get an opportunity to see other shooters.) So here's the question:

If you use a round patch for cleaning that you pierce on your jag, I assume that once you run your rod through the barrel, it cannot be drawn back or the patch would come off. You don't pull the rod back out without a patch on, do you? Do you wrap a new patch on to draw the rod back?

(I have only used square patches on a parker hale style jag.)
 
Just draw the rod back through without a patch. I assume, of course, that you have the correct sized jag AND rod!!!! If you use a rod for a 17 cal, and you have a much larger (30 cal) jag on the end of it and attempt to pull it back through the bore you could damage the crown when the bigger section of the jag hits the crown. I have seen a guy with a setup like this, and you could hear the metalic "TIC" sound when the jag hit the crown as he pulled the rod back !!!:eek:
 
I've got some pull-through kits that use round patches..... basically they're pierced to get them centered up on a pull-through. some have a hole, some a slit and some a C-shaped cut which leaves a tab.
