Hoppe's 9 Solvent

Does anyone know for sure whether Hoppe's 9 solvent has anything in it that prevents rust. My bottle says prevents rust but then it also says to run a patch with oil in it for storage. I called Hoppe's 9 and it is owned by Bushnell now, so a kid in customer service didn't have a clue.

I am just wondering if I can clean a gun with it and leave it in my barrel to prevent rust temporarily or will it cause rust sitting in there.

On occasion

I have left a thin film in the barrel, but never for extended storage. A few weeks OK, longer than that I apply a little oil. Long time storage, a film of Rig.

YMMV

... or will it cause rust sitting in there.

It will not cause rust but it evaporates fairly quickly and leaves the bore unprotected. As posted above--RIG is great for long term rust prevention.

Rig is gone

That is correct. Rig is no longer in production. If you see it you better buy it.

Is so, that's a shame. I've used it for many years and it's a great product. It's been on the market since at least the 1940s.

There is nothing like the smell of Hoppe's #9 in a hunting camp!

It might be telling of your age, but how many of you remember using Hoppe's number 7?

I bet Hoppe's is OK for short term. Over time it dries out and leaves a very sticky goo. BreakFree makes a product called Collector which they claim is good for long term storage and rust prevention. For short term I just use any gun oil or EEZOX which is a dry waxlike rust preventative.

Try Rusteprufe when your rig runs out.....good stuff.

I pretty much conclude that Hoppe's 9 solvent won't cause rust and will prevent it for a short period of time (say about a week) in your barrel. Everything I see says basically this; it doesn't appear to do damage like a Sweet's or something harsh, but also it seems that it will prevent rust like an oil because of rust preventatives. So, I would say from what I see, you can clean it and leave a little in the bore and your barrel will be fine.

A long time ago, someone once told me that the main ingredient in modern (without nitrobenzene) Hoppe's #9 is kerosene.

Boyd, I was also told WD-40 was........

Kerosene and fish oil :( don't know for sure. I stopped using Hoppe's #9 quite some time ago because of the gumminess over time, and lack of rust prevention. No offense, but it does(or, used to) say "solvent", with nothing mentioned about rust protection. I was told to never expect "solvent" to protect against rust, because its function was to remove as much of everything possible, including grease and oil, to clean the steel in preparation for new lubrication and/or rust preventative. CLP, however(cleans, lubes, protects), is probably what one would be safest with using, as it would probably give you that "week or two protection". The only problem with that approach is, everyone is so "busy" these days with every minute spoken for, that it can be downright dangerous to figure you have a "week or two", only to wake up a "month or three" later, to find out your protection evaporated in function, like a 401K we forgot to get out from. I just had a friend spend about $600(w/expedited shipping) to replace a Savage 99 barrel w/another Savage 99 barrel(brand new, old stock)because he fired military corrosive .308(don't know what country's)in the rifle. He SAID he cleaned it with "military bore cleaner". My question was, did he clean it with military "corrosive" bore cleaner?? He said he didn't remember, but this was 3-4 years later from the looks of that bore. HTH
