Holton Gun Club

I arrived here yesterday and was surprised at the amount of work that has gone on at the range. I have never seen a "CLUB" owned range put this much work into their facilities to improve the range. For those who have been here before, and I hope I did the picture thingy right, you will see the differences. The first picture#1 is the new look from bench 30, they took out about 20 yds. #2 is from the old bench #1, that’s right they took out 50 yds along the side. #3 is the new target frames from the back, #4 is the 100yd grounds. This after this match will be limed and planted and taped off so that no one can walk on it for a month. The "RAMROD" behind this venture has been Bob Scarbrough Jr along with the rest of the Scarbrough family and the work ethics and dedication, and backing of Jim Dyke and Dan Groleau. Jim lives about 120 miles North of Holton, brought his camper down a month ago and has been here since working the heavy equipment along with Dan. As you can see all new target frames lined up like St Louis. Set your rifle up on bench 7 and raise the rifle and you are on target 7 at 200yds. I could, and will, later go on about the improvements. The menus have been revamped for eats. Example Friday night, yes I did say Friday night, will be supper consisting of BBQ chicken, ribs, mashed potatoes with gravy, beans and desert all for, now get this, $7.00 and it gets better. If the pictures don’t go through, I will need help. I drop them down to 640X400 pixels.

Holton Again

Well it looks like I got the picture right, not bad for an old fella. Now for the tough part, the Holton Gun & Bow club has over the years put back into the club monies made by bench rest and now you can see the difference. They want to, down the road add about 10 or 15 benches. To do this and also do more upgrades takes money, end of story. Do they want donations, “NO” but I don’t think they would turn it down. So how can you help?? Show up for the matches that are scheduled this year and partake of one of the best “CLUB” ranges in Eastern North America, your numbers are what will count. In the last entry I mentioned about Bob, Jim and Dan, well there are more people and I know I will miss some. John & Arlene Inman, Connie Wyant, Mrs. Scarbrough, “NANCY” she said I could say that. Shorty Geldecker, and I know there is more. You people need a vote of thanks and “YOU”, as competitors can thank them by showing up.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! What a transformation, to all involved doing the work, and the Holton Gun Club, you are to be commended on a great project. You guy's and gal's are doing a great job. Now I guess I'll have to make a six hundred fifty odd mile trip sometime soon to try out the new digs.
Again, that is just awesome!

For those of you that haven't heard yet, This is the range where this years IBS Score Nationals will be held. When we were in PA at this years meeting Matt Guthrie put in the Bid for Holton to be the location of the 2011 IBS Group Nationals also. I am happy to see the improvement on the range, I am sure holding the Nationals 2 years in a row will pay off for them, and the shooters that frequent this range. The improvements are coming along nicely.

Looks like a great range. Too bad it wasn't just a little closer. 14 hours away is a long drive for the weekend.

Wow

sure would be nice to see something half the size in these parts.........

Love the backer setup...

Where is Holton exactly? Want to mark it on Google earth.

No more bad mirage problem.....

I shot at Holton 2 weeks ago for their first score match of the season. What a difference!!!!! There is no more of that terrible Holton mirage that has been such a challenge for many shooters. That is because nearly the entire range has been lowered by the removal of high spots, and to make it even better the backers have been raised up several feet. This will allow a lot more air space between the ground and the line of sight. Believe me when I say "this has all but eliminated mirage at Holton".

Now we wil have to learn to shoot in a little more breeze, but it will sure be nice to see the targets.

Holton has always been a great club and a beautiful place to visit, and now it is even better. Many thanks to the crew at Holton!!!!

I second that. Have to admit though, I enjoyed trees on both sides. Holton has always been a tough range to shoot, with flags going in all differant directions at the same time. But...what a challange. We have one identical to it at Bristol, WI.

Along with the others, many thanks to the crew that undertook this tedious task , not to mention the thought process.
