Doug Shea had his new gun working well, winning Unlimited class with 746 38X

Al Joly a close second with 741 29X

David Shattuck won the sub 20 fpe with a 708 15X

I still am trying to get a .22 shooting under 20 fpe. Tried to get the LD/Tim SS barrel shooting under 20 FPE. Guess I will have to go to .20 or .177.

We had a new shooter Mark Hagan and he did well. It was his first time and had some equipment problems.

Franky helped him with his M-rod.

Norm was working on his gun in between targets.

One more match before the world qualify at Pinnacle Mountain on Jan 8 th.

Question for David ? or Anyone.
Holbrook is at 200 ft above sea level. If my gun is shooting at 700 fps. at Holbrook. Will it be shooting faster or slower at Pinnacle Mountain elevation?

See you next month.

Paul

Paul, Thank you for another great match it is always a good time. I was glad to see a new shooter Mark Hagan could make the match and congratulations to Dave Shattuck for his win in the sub 20 fpe class.
I built my first 20 fpe kit for my Rapid yesterday and I hope to start testing today and I will be happy to compare notes with you and see if it will help with your gun. I don't think the elevation will be much of a factor at PM I would be more concerned with making sure that the action is as close to oil free as possible especially as the temps approach freezing and below.
Good shooting everyone.
Doug

Paul, I'm curious about your experiences with the SS barrel. For example, accuracy, velocity, and consistency of velocity, and fouling. What pellets work best with it so far?
Nice score Doug, I think that is the best I've seen with the new targets @25m.
Agree about velocity difference at PM, I would think that spring guns would be more apt to show a difference due to air density.
Wish I could have made it Saturday.

Paul,

Thanks for running another great match. They're always enjoyable, and as the winter moves forward become even more so.

Doug, you did great, and I absolutely love your stock! You sure will turn some heads down South next summer with it, and could even come home with a boat load of orders if you ever decide to go into the stock making business. I know I'd put in for one.

I wasn't aware that I was the only one shooting @ 20 f/p, but I'll take the win anyway. Now, just to show how badly I did; I'm shooting .177 cal. right in the gun's sweet zone, and have shot some pretty impressive scores in the past with this set-up, so obviously a great deal of work needs to be done. Maybe next month.

Paul, as for any elevation difference: that gonna be the least of our problems. When shooting at Sea Level vs. 1500' compared to when shooting at 65° vs. ±1°, guess which one will have the greatest amount of affect on your overall performance? Hint: Think of shooting in COLD, Dense, Dry (or sometimes humid) Air with your fingers being absolutely froze to the point of just shy of frost-bite vs. shooting in nice Warm, Humid Air .....say nothing of how our guns in general are going to perform while being subjected to the extremes.

During the winter I've always found that any cross breezes, no matter how slight, will have about twice as much affect on your bullets travel as during the summer, and this should still hold true for our PuffGuns.

A good rule of thumb has always been, at least in rimfire and centerfire: when starting at 70°, for every degree gained or lost your projectile will either gain or loose respectively ±1 f/s. So, if you're starting out with your gun set up for ±890 f/s when at 65° to 70°, even though the pellet will only be traveling slightly slower when leaving the barrel due to the cold, on January 8th by the time it reaches the target it's gonna be traveling much slower than if it had been shot either Indoors, or Outdoor during the summer. With Pellets I doubt if the ratios are the same as the others because 1.) they are so much lighter than either rimfire or Centerfire projectiles, and 2.) the distance being traveled is only 25M vs. 50, 100 or 200Y, but it still should have profound affect on our scores. Our problem is: the energy is based on the weight/speed of the pellet as it leaves the muzzle, and not 20M down-range, so we'll be pretty much handcuffed as to what we can do to try and compensate between now and April or May.

I'll bring along my the chrony that Santa's supposed to be dropping off, and I'm positive we'll all know more about this temperature stuff come 4 P.M. on January 8th.

Thank's Paul. Great time was had by all. Congrat's Doug the Xs keep on coming ,Dave that was a hard fought Win in 20flb ,good to see Al back healthy and shootin strong after long time. Nice meeting Mark and his new Marauder. Read test at SL and 5K Springer RWS350 more than 100fps slower at 5K, thin air? cold? air psi? What will PCPs do at Pin-Mt. Elv and cold on 1/8/11.....Franky

Sorry that I missed this post last week. Congrats to Doug, Al and Dave.
Doug, what's this new stock you built?

Best,
Michael

Hi Mike,
My new stock is all Aluminum I designed it primarily for Benchrest but a Bi Pod or front fold away handle can be added if I wanted to use it for other things. So far it works well , it was a little cool to the touch at 11 degrees though other than that no problems. Do not put your tongue on it in cold weather , man that was a mistake my skin is still growing back. I'll try to post a pic.

Very nice Doug... and here I'm thinking, " Doug, the man works in wood, must be one heck of a wood stock" ...

Surprize!!! --- nice going.

Michael

Sweet looking rifle Doug, and congrats on the UL win and to Dave. It's going to be fun next year and predict good scores being shot from a lot of folks.

Thanks Mike , I needed something that could withstand the Bendix Weather Effect we shoot in all season.

Joe, Thanks and I"m happy to see you will be shooting air guns again at your range. It should shape up to be a very interesting season for sure.
