Looks like the RAWS still have it!

Good shooting all, I'll try and dust off my LV RAW and bring it to the Jan. Shoot. Just need to gas up and find the pellets LOL.

Curious which of the HV shooters sorted their match pellets (air gauge, weigh, etc)?

Pellet Sorting

Kim, first I buy some different lots of pellets to see which lot my rifle likes best. Usually it's the lot with the highest percentage of head sizes my barrel likes. (In this case 4.55). Then I buy a sleeve or two of that lot.

Next I go through a tin with the pellet gauge to weed out any 4.54 or 4.53 head sizes. Lastly I check skirts for any damage or irregularities. I don't roll, only because I haven't set up a system to do it yet. I think that would be a good last step.

I don't weigh for 25 meters because I don't think it matters. What do you all think about that?

I shot one lot in the first match and had some wild fliers. Like barely hitting the 9 ring! Shot the 746 with that lot. (I thought that was a good lot from former testing....) Then I switched to a recent lot that had tested very well in my barrel and shot the 750. These fliers, even from a good lot, leads me back to the need to set up a method for rolling pellets to weed out the weird head shapes. It's easier to see deformed skirts, but, for me, head shapes are not so easy to ascertain. I think rolling would make those pellets with weird head shapes stand out.

I'd be happy to hear any other sorting methods folks use that are different than this. I'm really a new-b and am open to learning.

I'm still unsure about the benefit of sorting (air gauge, weigh, roll, visual rejection) over simply* finding good shooting lots.

With the high scores of this indoor match there might be information in knowing who sorted and how.

I usually roll pellets.

What I have is a piece of 12"x12" mirrored tile with stips of plastic edging around the edges. I raise one end by using a couple of wooden paint stirrers, mark a starting point near the middle of the high end, then also mark 2 or 3 landing spots along the edge and separate pellets by which ones land the most consistantly in the same spot. By using the glass you also hear any deformed or our-of-round pellets clicking. The best part is: this set-up is wicked cheap and you can get everything at Home Depot.

It's quick and easy to do plus you end up a little more confident in what you have.

I Air Gauge all the pellets, but only weigh the 8.4's.
