I just purchased 8lbs of T-5010 and T-5020 and I was told it is hotter than T-5020 which left me totlally in the dark. Can some one tell me is T-5010 an exact match to a Hodgons or IMR or some other powder without me spending hours testing? Commom cartriges IU 338-378, 308, 6.5/284, 30-06, .338 Thanks for your time.

I did talk with Thunderbird and they said T-5010 and T5020 was faster than T-870. As far as T-870 is the same as AA-8700 but being faster told me nothing nor did it give me a starting point for any of the calibers I shoot.

If you go back and look at some of.................

the OLDer Hodgdon manuals, like #17 to #20 you will see that Hodgdon had(still has??) an H-870. It is probably the slowest spherical(ball) powder they marketed; and AA8700 is just Accurate Arms' take on that, so that people would realize, "Hey!! This has'ta be like that!!" Now, 5010-5020 sounds like an extruded IMR powder maybe from .50 or 20MM ammo; as far as it being "...an exact match to..." anything, is slim to none, it appears as though you just may have to do some testing; But, then again, if you don't want to do the testing, why go out and buy "bargain-basement" powder?? Sooner or later, you have to TEST(so buy) or NOT TEST(so pay more):mad: And, here you are.;) Now, you might look on e-bay for old manuals, or, talk to some of the more experienced shooters in your organization,:) this is where/how you'll be able to dig out that info you need. Its out there.....look in some old Lyman books, older Hornady, and I know Sierra listed that powder in their manuals; this gives you somewhere to start. OLD manuals, keep them around until you feel like you're ready to click off in the next year or two,:D by then, nobody else will need/want them, and you can throw them away......GUILT-FREE:eek::D:D;)

thank you

Thank you for taking the time to answer onthe 510 and 520 issue. Testing is no problem what so ever, but living in Sitka, AK I have no knowledge base locally, I just never gave it any thought to look in 60's and 70's loading manuals. Thanks, Seagull :)

Hodgdons #26

Manual has info for H-5010 if you can find 1. But I'm not sure how H compares to T 5010.

Roger T thanks for responding I am really surprised at the number of reloader this is all the info I can find, this does get me a little closer.

Load info

You never said what you're loading 5010 in. It's been my experience that you need Hvy for cal bullets no matter what cal you use along with Magnum primers to get it lit (I use Fed 215s)and you'll still possibly get some smoke at the muzzle. Weigh each charge, a powder measure just won't give good results ( the kernels are just too big/coarse) to work well in the measure. Last it's DIRTY VERY DIRTY clean often. I picked up a 100 lb keg in the late 60s from Herters and I still have 20+ LBs left:eek:

i too live in sitka and about a month ago picked up an 8 lb jug of T-5010 and an 8 lb jug of T-5020.

i plan on using it for reloading 50BMG.

from what i've heard, T-5010 is about the same as H5010 and IMR5010.

i also found that T-5020 is slightly faster in burn rate than T-5010. its supposed to be the same as WC860.

extensive web search has gleaned a small amount of info... enough for starting loads to work up from.
