Just getting started with this cartridge and need some basic guidance from the knowledgeable folks on this board. Best case to form the Ack.? Best method for fireforming ? Accuracy nodes and any other info you'd care to share. Intend to use this rifle for informal long range shoots and hunting with an eye on getting my feet wet in registered competition before investing in a new rig.

Thanks,

I use Norma .300 WBY cases. I have a .334” Neck, so I use the Pistol Powder/CoW method (12.0 gr. of Unique, fill the case to the case mouth with Cream of Wheat Cereal and tap the case until the CoW settles at the NK/Shoulder junction. The plug it with a ¼ sheet of Toilet Paper rolled into a cylinder) without a bullet. If you don’t have a tight neck chamber just load and shoot. With the Berger 210 VLDs the node is normally 3,050 fps. I use Reloader 25 and depending on the Lot # 79.5 – 81.0 grains will get it there.

Like Baron, most long range folks shoot 208-210 grain bullets with this chambering. Other powders known to work well with this chambering and bullet weight are H4831SC and Reloader 22. Both Reloader 25 and 22 are somewhat temperature sensitive, and your groups can "zipper" badly on you with both increases and decreases in temperature and humidity. Confirming your load during weather conditions you expect during your "event" should be considered a "good idea". Developing your load in February and using it in a July match should be considered a "not-so-good" idea. :) These Reloader powders are tougher to clean than H4831SC, particularly at the throat. (my experience, "your mileage may vary") All that being said, most systems chambered in 300 Ackley fall in love with these Reloader powders, with the resultant stunning accuracy.

Seating depth preferences vary, but many of the North Carolina bunch have had success with the bullet ogive at 10 to 30 thousandths off the lands. Neck tensions used have been typically 2 to 3 thousandths less than the neck diameter with a loaded bullet. (think Redding "S" die rather than a pure neck sizing die) Some systems like magnum primers, other sytems like large rifle primers. If you are primarily hunting with your resultant load, I'd stick with a Fed 215M or other magnum primer.

Hope this has been of help. Good luck with your load development.
