Hello,

I just purchased an FN benchrest rifle. I have not been able to find any informatin on the rifle. What I do know, it's chambered in .264, the bolt action looks similar to a Ruger m77, the barrel is one of the biggest diameter barrels (approx 1.5") I have seen, and the stock is about the size of a 4x4. There are some numbers on the bottom of the bolt handle, but I wont be able to check them until I get the rifle back from the gun shop. I am unsure what I can use to mount a scope to the base's that are currently on the rifle, or if I can attach a rail, or replace them. Any info on scope rings or mount, and knowledge of this rifle will be much appreciated. Oh and on last thing, if it makes a difference, the trigger is about half an inch wide, with maybe a 1-2lbs pull.

Thank you,
Josh

The scope mounts are for a Unertl or Lyman scope with the external style adjustments.
The numbers on the bottom of the bolt handle should match the action's serial number.

Thank you Hal

Now the big question. I was looking into mounting a scope to it. Looking at Leupold and Nightforce. Are there any rings I can mount directly to those bases, or are there rail's or ring's I can swap them out with? My main concern is to not drill any more holes in the barrel. I'm guessing, but the bases looked to be 10-12" apart from each other.

Thank you,
Josh

I think you will have to drill and tap the receiver. Even if you mounted a later model internal adjustable scope, you couldn't get your eye close enough to use it. Try to find a vintage Lyman or Unertl scope.

I can't quite tell from the pictures, but the bases are either REDFIELD for a 3200 scope or Unertl POSA types. The Redfield 3200 came with two sets of mounting screws, high power and rimfire, and the bases for the high power screws had a deeper screw cut. If they are Redfield, 3200's are available on the secondary market for a lot less than Unertls (1/2?).

The trigger is probably a Canjar, and would be era appropriate with the Redfield. Sounds/looks like maybe a Colorado School of Trades project.

Good shooting.

As Butch and others have said unless you find one of the old external adjustment scopes, such a Unertl, Lyman or the 3200 Redfield, the exsisting mounting system won't work with the new, shorter scopes.

Find a good gunsmith and have him drill and tap some holes in the action for a nice set of FN Mauser bases.

As Wapiti pointed out your rifle might have a Canjar trigger on it or maybe just a trigger shoe.

Some of the Canjar's were offered in a "set" style. They work as a standard adjustable trigger, 2-3 lbs or if the back of the trigger shoe was pushed forward into the set position, it could be adjusted to few ounces.

The 3200 is an internal adjustment scope that will fit the d&t ring spacing holes of the older external adj. scopes with the proper rings and bases. As an additional plus, they are quite attractively priced.

Good shooting.

If you decide to go with the older styles scope be sure to measure it before you buy it.
It's hard to tell from a picture, but I don't think the Unertl 8X I have would work with the front base mounted that far forward on the barrel.
My total scope length is just under 24". Leaving a couple of inches for the scope to slide, that leaves 15" from the front scope base to the rear eye piece.
Some of the other early scope might be longer.

When you find out more about your new rifle let us know.
