Using the rear adjustment on the typical 3 leg rest causes some big changes in the angle of the front bag relative to the bottom of the fore arm as you go around a Score target.
Depending on the front bag (thick, thin, etc.) and how it's filled and what it's filled with...this can give you p.o.i. changes. Plus, how the butt fits the rear bag also changes as you adjust the front rest..the rear of the butt tips back as you go up with the front rest.
Now..I'm not saying this isn't how to do it. Matter of fact, this is exactly how I adjust my rest with my HBR gun. But
some combinations of bags, etc. can cause problems.....thin front bags that are really hard come to mind. Some combos that work fine for Group shooting can give 'ya gas
when you try going around a Score target.
The easiest way to check and see if this is your problem is to slide the gun back and forth to go between targets and just use the rear leg screw for the final fine adjustments. If this settles the p.o.i. change down, you know it's a bag/bag fill/angle issue. A front bag that too tight on the sides can cause these same type of p.o.i. changes. One of the first things Score shooters seem to do when they are having problems going around the target is to start tightening up on the sides of the front bag...which almost always makes things worse.
On the rear bag...I don't like the kind that let the bottom of the butt rest on the flat between the ears. I like a bit of 'air' between the bottom of the butt. But, I've seen other guys use that setup just fine...it depends on the whole setup.
On my .30 cal BR guns, I've started using a tape that's not as slippery as most stock tapes. It adds a good amount of drag and does a better job of controlling the gun as it recoils.
For what it's worth..just my thoughts on it. Let us know what you find, okay? -Al
