Help from score shooters.

The last score Match I shot I had a problem with my gun Spitting shots 1 bullet high & 2 bullets right on 2 to 3 targets of each relay. It varied on which shots it would spit. But the shot location on the target was exactly the same on all. After the match I shot 1 group for score & shot a mid to low 1. did not have time to retrieve the target but it was a little hole. I have been farley good at guesing the size. I suspect a bag problem. I am using a caldwell base with a Hoen top & a cordura front bag & a Edgewood rear bag.
Any help would be appreciated. I have regular sand in both bags. The front bag is semi soft. russell m

I shoot with 4 flags. I find it hard to believe That I could shoot 2 to 3 targets on each relay & catch the wind just right to get 10 shots to go in EXACTLY the same spot on 5 different targets. One bullet high & 2 bullets right. It may be the case but I realy dont think so. russell m

-What stock are you using?

-How are you going from target to target...adjusting the rear leg screw on the rest, sliding the gun, adjusting the mariner wheel?

-Does the bottom of the butt contact the area between the ears of the rear bag?

Al

Which is better? Having the rifle contact the bottom or held up by the ears?

McClain stock very old, the bottom of the stock is more rounded. NO the stock does not touch the top of the bag. I use the rear leg screw on my sighter cam to adj for elevation. do not use the mariner wheel. russell m

Using the rear adjustment on the typical 3 leg rest causes some big changes in the angle of the front bag relative to the bottom of the fore arm as you go around a Score target.

Depending on the front bag (thick, thin, etc.) and how it's filled and what it's filled with...this can give you p.o.i. changes. Plus, how the butt fits the rear bag also changes as you adjust the front rest..the rear of the butt tips back as you go up with the front rest.

Now..I'm not saying this isn't how to do it. Matter of fact, this is exactly how I adjust my rest with my HBR gun. But some combinations of bags, etc. can cause problems.....thin front bags that are really hard come to mind. Some combos that work fine for Group shooting can give 'ya gas  when you try going around a Score target.

The easiest way to check and see if this is your problem is to slide the gun back and forth to go between targets and just use the rear leg screw for the final fine adjustments. If this settles the p.o.i. change down, you know it's a bag/bag fill/angle issue. A front bag that too tight on the sides can cause these same type of p.o.i. changes. One of the first things Score shooters seem to do when they are having problems going around the target is to start tightening up on the sides of the front bag...which almost always makes things worse.

On the rear bag...I don't like the kind that let the bottom of the butt rest on the flat between the ears. I like a bit of 'air' between the bottom of the butt. But, I've seen other guys use that setup just fine...it depends on the whole setup.

On my .30 cal BR guns, I've started using a tape that's not as slippery as most stock tapes. It adds a good amount of drag and does a better job of controlling the gun as it recoils.

For what it's worth..just my thoughts on it. Let us know what you find, okay? -Al

I found the same as Al wrote about how the bags are filled and how the rifle sits on them. I got better results with harder, more filled bags. I think if the bags are soft they roll around under the rifle more, causing more dispersion when the rifle and bags are in different levels/angles of contact. I also got better results with a smooth microfiber cloth covering both bags. My rifle slides very consistently now.

Thanks Al. I will try move the gun on the bags & using the rear screw for the final adjustment. I will see if this corrects my problem. This is the exact help I was needing.
I Have sent my scope back to Leaupold, have some issues with it also. I will put another scope on & try shooting the Sun after this one coming. I will report back then. russell m
