Hello from Canada, a few questions

Hello everybody, I love this site and I have gotten a lot of valuable information from it. I hail from the land up north and I have just began my rimfire BR experience in the last few months. Currently I shoot a Krico 330, but I have a big urge to build a custom in the future.

With the Canadian dollar crumbling lately, the smart thing to do for us is to buy before the price goes up (again and again). I plan to bring in different parts for my build as time goes by.

I have decided to go with a Shilen barrel as we have an authorized dealer in my province. The question I have is, what contour is ideal for my usage? I will most likely do a lot of BR with it, but also have some interest in 3p. What do you think? And 1-16" twist? Finish off at 22" or...?

As far as actions go, availability of custom actions are hard to come by up here, so I'll probably go with a high quality factory action like a 40x, Annie 54, Win 52, etc.

P.S. I am interested in getting a tuner for my Krico. What would you recommend?

Thanks in advance. :)

I just got a Shilen. I went with a .900, and it should finish between 24 and 25 inches. Shilen does a very good on his barrels.

Go to Dan Killough for your tuner. He is very good to deal with. He will answer your questions and help you get started in this madness. garrisone

I shoot both 3p and benchrest. I guess I can say that loosely. I use two different guns and I think you need to consider a few things. The stock. A dedicated benchrest stock is 3 inches wide, flat on the bottom. A 3p stock has facility for attaching a handstop and narrower, contoured for holding. One option is to use a 3p stock and in place of the handstop use a 3 inch wide piece of plexiglass or plywood attached temporarily in place of the handstop to give stability for benchrest shooting. Using two stocks is an expensive option.
Barrel. While a 24 inch barrel or there abouts is best for benchrest, a longer sight radius is best for 3p. If you use iron sights a bloop tube can be attached to the shorter benchrest barrel. If you shoot 3p exclusively with scope it solves some problems. You can use any length barrel and any tuner. With Iron sights you have a problem with the fatter tuners interfering with the iron sights. Switching between a bloop tube and fat tuner could be difficult to maintain. The Time Supertune with 10 inch long bloop tube will not interfere with iron sights and give some tuning although its capability as a tuner is questionable, I have one and they do work. Action. Some of the better benchrest actions would be difficult to use with 3p. Stick with right port, right bolt if right handed. Make sure it is easy to load in prone.

Thank you for all your answers. This information helps a lot! :)
