heavy bullets in a .300 WSM

I am wondering if any shooters shooting the .300 WSM is using any bullets heavier than the 210 grain bullet, I am thinking specifically of the 220 and the 240 SMK. Thanks, Ron Tilley

I've seen them tried but not successfully. I don't think the case has quite enough ummphh to send a 240 at 1K. Maybe if you wanted to try at 600 yards they'd work. I don't remember anyone doing that but I've not been around a lot of guys shooting 600Y BR with 30's either.

Depending on the range, who knows, it can't hurt to try.

What 4mesh said.

With the 210's into the rifleing the bullet is set back past the neck about 1 diameter and the load is compressed. With the right powder you can get 3000 fps but you are at the edge of over pressure territory. I ran mine at a bit over 2700.
Heavier bullet and less powder space means running them slower or using a faster powder.
If you extended the throat to get the bullet back into the neck you might have a shot at it.
If you decide to have such a barrel built, let us know how it works out.

The last thing I admit to be is a gunsmith. That being said, couldn't you just set up your gun to accept bullets seated WAY long. If I stick to the 300 WBY, I am going to get a reamer made with an OAL of about 3.8 to 3.9 inches. My current chamber is 3.78 to touch with a 210 VLD....just like the dummy round I sent to my gunsmith. Built to order!!! But...I am considering chambering up a WSM. Couldn't you get a match gun chambered up so that very little of, say 210 or 220, is actualy taking up boiler room space?

I guess I thought that this was common practice.

Oh well.....I guess I have an excuse for my ignorance.....I am a rookie!!:D

Keep up with the WSM threads. I just GOTS to know.;)

Thanks,
Tod

Tod, I have a chamber set up like you are talking about, not much bullet in the case, what I ran into is the bullet leaving before enough pressure was built to seal the case to the chamber resulting in soot the full length of the case and on the boltface. For me if the general conscensus was that there was enough case capacity I would try the same reamer and use the longer bullets in a faster twist barrel. Ron Tilley

I just talked to my smith.....he said EXACTLY what you did. Go figure!!:D

I would load up the 240's using H1000 powder.Your velocity won't be very good maybe 2550-2600 fps but it should shoot pretty good.
Let me know how it works out if you try it.

I shot this set-up today at the Folsom club, used it for light gun, it did good! I am gonna tweak it some more, but it shot a small group and placed in the top 3 of all the lg aggs and single targets today. It took more elevation to get there than I had calculated, I think that I can get about 100fps more and will try it and some seating depth changes.
