Headspacing the 243 Catbird

When cambering for the 243 Catbird which is the 270 Win case necked down to 6mm and the shoulder blown out to 35 degree would you just use the 06 go and no go gauge for head-spacing or does this it require a special head-space gauge?

Most improved cartridges use a go gage that is .004" shorter than the parent cartridges go gage. I'd expect that the Catbird would be the same way, but haven't had any experience with that wildcat. I'd probably just use the parent cartridge go gage and chamber it .004" short. You can always run the reamer in deeper if you need to later on, but I doubt if you would find the need to do it from what experience I've had with Ackley's.

I was aware that is how you headspace the 280 Ack but wasn't sure about the Catbird

As long as the Catbird is an improved cartridge and not a wildcat, you should be alright going with .004" short on a regular go gage. If in doubt, get a go gage. They don't cost much.

Do you have a reamer print?
If so, use a tooling ball and do the math.

Mike and Alan,

I don't know if your supposed to, but I made my own headspace guage from my reamer print for my HBR case.

I made it a little long, and put it back in the chuck and adjusted the length with a tool post grinder.

Is that a poor practice?

Nothing wrong with that and good to have if you are doing more than one.

I us a ball a lot with one offs, - wildcats and the odd chamberings that come this way. Takes about 5 minutes on paper and 2 in Surf Cam. I also use the same method all the time when making dies. Our dies split at the shoulder/body junction.
