Headspace on 40-X

I have a question concerning headspace on the CMP 40-X’s. What with the fact that most of us have received a 40-X with a mismatched bolt, is the headspace now incorrectly set. My understanding of headspace is that it is initially set during the phase when the barrel is installed before the extractor slots are cut. It is the distance between the chamber face and the bolt face (taking into account the recess). If the original bolt is replaced with another bolt, how is headspace reset without unscrewing the barrel and putting it back together? That procedure might require a re-facing and a re-chambering with new extractor cuts. Is there another way to reset headspace without removing the barrel? This is a question, in my opinion, that should be answered by those of you that are competent Remington gunsmiths.

No way to know without removing the FP assy and the extractors and checking your rifle with go and no-go gauges.

It is my understanding that the go no-go gages are used by CMP prior to shipment.

The lastest 40X's, come without bolts. How do they check HS?

To clear up some confusion. The latest 40-X's did come with bolts. The complete SB and HB rifles were complete, but may have mis-matched bolts. The CMP is/was also selling barreled receivers, which have no bolts.

cmp 40x headspace

They do a R___G______ Job by cutting material off the back of barrel with a non piloted reamer that makes a ring in front of the chamber you can see this ring if you look with a good borescope. If you remove your bolt and look at the end of barrel you will see where they cut some off the end of barrel, the cut will be a little larger than the bolt face. We got several cmp 40 x at our gun club and all of them I saw had this shinny cut on the back of the barrel.
