Haywire Update

This is a long story, deliberately so because the writer is confused and wishes to omit nothing that may be important. To put it another way, I have no idea what Is important important in this story, so I'm going to start from scratch and hope that someone can make sense of it all.
While shooting F-standard in Oz, the supply of 0.223 80 gn Sierra's dried up so the 80 gn Hornady was loaded with different charges and tried out at 900 last Saturday. The chrony is not working, so velocity testing was not possible. At 900 a load was selected that gave the shallowest elevation. That load grouped well inside the 900 bull but in order to shrink elevation further, it was decided to install a barrel tuner and bench the rifle at 100.
However, prior to benching, the rifle was given the father and mother of a cleaning, as a dark streak appeared on the patch that was used to wipe-out after the Usual, post-shoot, clean. The rifle had not been treated with JB for a long time and seeing the dark streak reminded me that the fouling was probably building up.
Much to-do followed getting the abrasive out, including a couple of boil outs, as dark patches kept coming out. A 'tester' swab with a non reactive bristle brush and Bore-Tech was applied and left o/n but wiping out revealing dark streaks, which were finally eliminated with metho on a few patches. Prior to shooting the bore was prepped with an oily brush and wiped out.
At The Range........finally and yes, there is an end to this story but it's a long way off:)
The first 5 shotter was fired without the tuner. Four shots touching with the first a half inch to the right. Mirage was switching and I was ignoring it. Total elevation 1/4".
The tuner was installed with the adjusting ring on zero and the group was 3/4 wide but 1/8" deep.
The adjuster ring was turned to postion 2 for a 5/8 wide by 1/2" deep five shotter.
With the adjuster on position 2 two shots had an elevation of 3/8". Not as good as groups 1&2, so the tuner was tuned back to zero. Previously, on this setting an elevation of 1/8" had been achieved, however the first 3 shots went in to 1/2". Getting worse!
The tuner was removed (in desperation, to get back what I had lost) and the first four shots formed a 1/2' group and the last, a low shot, opened it out to 5/8". Remember, the first group, minus tuner was only 1/4" deep.

Can any one tell me why I could not get back that 1/4" elevation of the first group. To put it another way, why didn't I get the same elevation for both groups, when they were shot with the same condition ie no tuner?
The rifle has fired 1400 rounds and thankyou all in advance, if for nothing else than reading all this. I appreciate that it is quite a study.

In the days following the above, when I was safely home and out of harms way, it occurred to me tha the barrel had not been cleaned enough, in spite of my efforts. My reasoning was that the 1.5 moa groups at 900 shrank substantially on the bench, to 1/4" deep, only deteriorating after the tenth shot/ second group.
WRONGGG!!!
On the 100 yard mound yesterday the man beside me, waiting his turn to shoot, informed me that my barrel was touching the fore-end stop on the front rest AAARRGHH!!!

Now I get it. Thank you all for your patience. I can't wait to get back to the range next week.

Thanks mate
By the way, I know you. I shoot with BRC
