my .900 4 groove shilens ratchet barrel wouldn't fit my hall action. the action must have been a older model action. so me and my smith have made a trade. i called dan killough and he asured me that the barrels are great barrel. i'm now going to be using a hart 6 groove barrel that has a shank on it so it will fit my action. i trust dan because he has helped me alot on the phone and in e-mails. i want to hear from so other guys using these barrels and what you all think about them.

i'll be ordering another shilens 4 groove ratchet barrel with a shank on it later this winter just incase i don't like the hart, but i'm ganna give the hart on heck of a try.

little italy shot a 2500 ara and a nys championship with a hall heart combo

The Shilen would be fine by fitting a bushing in the action, you're smith should know how to do this. Hart's have done quite well this year, including a possible IR50 world record.

Not sure what you meant by this. Hart barrels are made in Lafayette, NY and they do have a web site. There is also R.W. Hart & Sons, in Nescopeck, PA, they sell Hart barrels, but do not make them, in fact I do think that they are related.

That's uncle Wally.

Hart will sell a bunch of barrels next week.

why do you think hart will sell abunch of barrels next week wally? not because i'm using one for sure:D!! i'm nobody who just shoots in a match at buckcreek in kentucky. all you have to do is look my scores up on the a.r.a. sight from buckcreek and you'll know i'm nobody.

i was just wondering about these barrels. i was told today that they take longer to brake in because they are made out of harder stainless steel than most other barrels. the guy i talked to said that the brake in was the only downside. he said they will last longer than shilens and others for that very reason as well.

the guy that told me this is a friend of mine who has been through alot of rifles. he's had a bunch of custom rifles built by the same smith i'm having do my work as well.

to be honest i trust dan killough. if he says they make good barrels i trust him. he has sold alot of barrels and ammo to a great many of us. if he says it is good about anything i personally will take him at his word. i trust him that much. i've never seen him in person. i don't have a clue what he looks like. i can tell you his word has been as good as gold to me. he has never given me bad advice. thank you dan. it is guys like you and james pappas who will give advice freely that makes this the great sport that it is.

anybody else who is using one of these barrel who has hands on with them that would like to chime inhere?

i'm also going with the rva tuner. i'll pick it up from dan next month as well.

Your Bud may have had a lot of rifles, but he doesn't know rifle steels. If you Rockwell test the major brands they will come in 24-28RC. You get them much harder than that and it will eat up tools. Most of them use the same steel suppliers. It is funny how stories like these get started and they don't come from the barrel steel suppliers or the barrel makers.

do barrel maker's want 24 or 28 RC ? more less ? do barrel makers take what thay can get ? can thay refues a load of steel or would thay use a so/so load to keep up production ?
if you ask these questions to any of the barrel makers would thay tell ya the truth ?
butch i know you have cut on alot of steel and i would value your wisdom.

Makers buy what they specify and Crucible usually sends what is ordered. Most use 416 or 416R. That being said , every single lot has some variences and requires some modifications in tooling to produce a certain size hole. For that reason alone you will get dimensions that may well be different than what you think they might be.

I heard a rumor they were filing for bankruptcy...any truth? If true I wonder how it will impact barrel makers.

They filed some time back. Ultimately they were bought and it was reported a week ago the new owners will, at some time in the near term, bring in a larger pool of employees. No supply disruptions.
