The results of the Harrison Sportsman’s Club 100 yard group shoot on Saturday, August 16, 2014….

A cool, sunny morning greeted 15 benchrest shooters to the Harrison Sportsman’s Club in Harrison, Michigan. However, the morning was to change with rain starting at 11:00 am and ending around 1:00 pm. The winds were the typical Harrison/Budd Lake style – blowing flags over (mine), switching 360 degrees, and then dying off to dead calm for brief moments.

The LV class belonged to none other than the Rogers City Ship’s Captain, Rob Fairbanks. Rob travels from Rogers City (when he is not navigating the Great Lakes) all the way down to Harrison with his sidekick, the Indian River Referee, Bob Zimmer. Rob travels 2-1/2 hours one way and Bob has the short end with 2 hours up to Indian River. Rob annihilated the rest of the LV gang with a smoking 0.1756” aggregate. He spilled the beans at the Budd Lake Bar when he told us that he screwed on his Dwight Scott Super Shoot 6PPC barrel days before the match. Oh, and he was using Hottenstein boattails too! This aggregate was with a 0.351” on the last match too!

Joe Hynes was shooting his ‘secret bullets’ with N133 trying to keep up with Rob. Joe put up a valiant effort and secured 2nd place in LV with his fine 0.2330”. Close on Joe’s heels was the editor (Matt) limping in with 0.2412” shooting H322.

Factory Class was fun to watch! The positions changed at the end of every stage. After the first stage was complete, Bob Zimmer, the Indian River Referee, led the class with Doug Mulders close on his heels. Then Doug decided to kick in the after burners in stage #3 by firing a phenomenal 0.168”! (Doug noticed that Bob was having trigger troubles so he thought that he had better make his move!). But not-to-be-forgotten Kurt (The Bean Counter) Krug was hovering in the background and gradually took the lead by stage #4 and never looked back! Kurt won the Factory Class with a fantastic 0.4130”! Dan Ryan luckily won the honorable mention slot with a 0.5130”. Dan shot his wind flag and luckily the bullet went into the last group! Some shooters have all the luck! Buffalo Bill Stiverson was having one of those four-in-one days again. He decided to make a drastic change in his bench setup and fired a phenomenal 0.215” in the last match. I suspect that he will now be in contention in the Factory Class from here on out. Fine shooting Bill!

The Sandbagger Class was nailed down by Rick Averill shooting his 6PPC with a fine 0.4256"! Rick always provides a lot of color and interesting stories between relays!

Now onto the smallest group of the day! Rob Fairbanks turned in an extremely small group (the smallest that I have ever seen so far at Harrison) at 0.066”! It looked like it was paper punched – the ‘hole’ was so cleanly cut! What a fine show of marksmanship, Rob!

Small groups in the LV Class…..
Match #1 Jeff Aberegg 0.118”
Match #2 Joe Hynes 0.140”
Match #3 Rob Fairbanks 0.118”
Match #4 Rob Fairbanks 0.066”!
Match #5 John Vanmiddlkoop 0.108”

Small groups in the Factory Class……
Match #1 Bob Zimmer 0.286”
Match #2 Kurt Krug 0.317”
Match #3 Doug Mulder 0.168”
Match #4 Kurt Krug 0.327”
Match #5 Bill Stiverson 0.215”

The range officers for the day were none other than Dick Wright and Jim Guinn. They could be national announcers for the Annual Cherry Festival (their voices carry so!). Thank you guys for your help! And a big thank you to Bill Stiverson for buying the donuts, getting the targets, opening the range, making the coffee, and I am sure there are many other items that Bill does that we don’t know about. Thank you so very much Bill for making the shoots so fun to attend!

The next match will be a 100 yard score match to be fired on Saturday, September 6, 2014. Come up (or down or over) and enjoy great camaraderie and fantastic scenery at the Harrison Sportsman’s Club 100 yard range!

Just the messenger boy….. Matt
