harrel premium powder thrower

Hi folks just wondering if anynone could tell me do you have to calibrate the harrel power measure. The increments on the side of the measure does not correspond with the weight that is being thrown. Any suggestions

The first time you set up for any charge you have to "calibrate" it weighing your charges until you get what you're looking for. I write down the setting in my loading data and then the next time I load for that round, I just set the measure back to that reading. It works great and is repeatable.

I've only got a few thousand rounds loaded with it, and so far it has not failed. I still check one every so many rounds just to be sure, but that has gone from one every five to one every ten rounds. And I still do a visual check of powder level in all the cases in the loading block before seating bullets.

when it's brand new it will have static everywhere. wipe it down inside and out with a static sheet for the drier.

Harrell Measure Calibration

Hello,

Attached is a formula, that will work in Microsoft Exel or the Star Office Program. It is very easy to use. Just open the program, and weigh the charges several times at each of the cardinal points...ie30 (Clicks) 40 (clicks), 50 ( Clicks) and 60 (Clicks). On my setup, I even go to 20 Clicks.

When you are satisfied with all of the measurements, simply enter all of the data in each of the respective blocks..the rest of the data will automatically fill in. I have done it for three powders. I seems to be as repeatable as the proper use of the Harrell measure will allow. The Data that is currently on the file is what I use..so you will need to determine your own values. But have patience, it works. I have also included the Basic Lyman file. I t works the same but has more places for data.

I think you might be mistaken on what the marks on the vernier scale is for on any powder thrower. If I'm wrong on this I apologize. But judging by your original statements I believe that you are under the impression that say the "30" mark on the Harrell should throw 30gr of powder?

If so, this is very incorrect and could be a very dangerous proposition when reloading.

The scale on a powder measure is simply a reference number only and not an indication of the weight of the powder charge that is being thrown. You have to setup a graph chart like the other posters here have attached and explained for EACH powder that you plan to use your thrower for. For instance with my Harrell I throw right around 29.7gr of N133 at 54 clicks. I have a spreadsheet setup also that I threw powder for each setting to setup my spreadsheet. Then those printed out sheets are kept with the thrower at matches and here in my reloading room for future reference.

If I'm an wrong in my assumption above I apologize. But, if this is what you thought the thrower was suppose to do, please ask away or get on the phone with someone from this board and I'm sure there will be more than enough volunteers to help you do this right. Harrell throwers are good equipment, you just need to lean on the side of safety here.
