handlapping

My technique on fouled factory barrels-

1-1/8" square patches for .22 bores & 1-3/4" square patches for .24 to .458 bores.

Clean carbon from bore w/ solvent of choice.
(I don't use brushes in rifle bores, as to protect the crown)
Push a patch of Lead Clean Cloth thru bore, short stroking the first 4-6" fwd of chamber.
Push thru bore.
Bore Scope for verification.
Push wet patch of bore solvent thru bore.
Apply 400 grit Silicon Carbide oil base lapping compound to patch, short stroking 4-6" fwd of chamber.
Push patch thru bore.
Flip patch over & push full length thru bore.
Do not short stroke patch at muzzle end as reversing direction will elongate bore.
Push wet patch of bore solvent thru bore.
Bore Scope for verification.
Repeat w/ 600 grit silicon carbide oil base lapping compound.
Push patch thru bore.
Flip patch over & push full length thru bore.
Wet patch.
Repeat w/ 800 grit silicon carbide oil base lapping compound.
Push patch thru bore.
Flip patch over & push full length thru bore.
Wet patch.
Bore Scope for verification.

Reversing direction while lapping will elongate/undercut.

A quality rod w ball bearing handle & a tightened jag(not allowed to loosen/turn) will allow consistent FEEL of what is happening.

Clean chamber/breech/lug abutments verified w/ bore scope.
Grease bolt lugs/extraction cam surfaces.

Been lapping factory barrels for 30+ years!!
Fire Lapping isn't for me!!

how too handlapp a riflebarell ?
what too use ?

Here's another way.

Wrap a cleaning rod with tape and cloth to form a "stopping wad" below an old cleaning jag, an undersized jag. Insert it into the bore stopping with the tip 1" from end, plugging the bore. Carefully apply a waterbound abrasive compound to the inside of the bore and let it dry for a day. Put on your goggles and apron and pour molten lead into the hole. This is harder than it looks, use a little tilt.

Tap it thru just a couple thou to crack it loose, trim the end and lap.

As it loosens up reach in and re-upset the end.
