Hi I'm new to the forum and am hoping that someone here handloads the 300 Win Mag. I performed a ladder test last week using reloader 22 from 71 gr - 74 gr. with the berger 190 vld. It was approx 45 degrees that day. from that data i decided my best accuracy would be between 71 grains and 72.5. my next trip to the range the temp was about 70. I started with the 72.5 and was getting great accuracy but my bolt was sticking. I looked at the primers and they were flat but not cratering and the same load a week before didn't produce the flattened primers. I worked down to 71 grains and the sticky bolt was getting better but still a concern. These loads were in the chrono at 2950. to the high 2800. I checked my scale and it was set properly. The only other thing that changed was I collet neck sized the new remington brass before loading. previously I just pushed the cases past the expander ball to tru up the case mouths. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I load for a few 300 WinMag's, mostly 150-180 gr hunting bullets, I have GREAT luck with AA3100 & Hodgdon H4831SC, H1000 and Retumbo, I neck size but FLS and anneal every second loading,,, and I load most of them HOT,,,,,, I do my load work march-sept then hunt in the cold, oct-jan,,,,,,

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,

My SAKO Greywolf model 75 factory rifle didnt shoot well till I free-floated the barrel and loaded Lapua brass with H1000, and Berger 190 and 210 VLD's

Welcome to RE22.
We have found the same issue. The 72.5 gr load worked for the 190 VLD, 1/2" groups or less. The sticky bolt was common in my Remington 700 worked over by RW Hart with a new Hart barrel. My brother does not have the same problem with his Sendoro and shoots the same load.
Try H4831sc and your problem will go away and the accuracy may improve a bit. I am shooting 71.5 gr.

Reloader 22 is a double based powder and along with more energy it is more sensitive to temperature swings. Along a different line, I have found that starting the bullet jammed into the lands can cause pressure spikes. I shoot my Win Mag with H 1000 and Hornady 208 gr. A-Max's .020" out from the lands with no problems.

I'll concur about considering the use of H1000. I have always had small extreme spreads in velocity with it , good accuracy, and working up a load has always been easy, with velocity and pressure increases where I expected them. My 300 mag tended to like the load hot for accuracy loads.

I use the Berger 210 grain VLD, Exactly 69.5+-0.05 grains of 7828 SSC and put the bullet on the lands. Last I had 0.5 inches at 200 yards 4 rounds. Worked quite a long time in both the charge weight and how far off the lands until I found the sweet spot.
