I've posted recently looking for tooling to cut moderately hard internal bores on my cheesy small equipment.

CHEAP ways..... buying a 400.00 cutter to enlarge a 20.00 die or make a threaded bore isn't in my plans. I got some good guidance from real machinists here (my "CBN insert" thread) but no solutions in my price range.

Best thing going was the cutter Chet Whitebread referenced and it's OK but doesn't leave the glassy finish I'm looking for.... it tends to fade in and out.....

So I was thinking...... "need sharp, stiff carbide or something even tougher/harder"

But STIFF is the biggie....

An' I had me one a' them 'PIPHanies.....

A SLOBBERED a Redding Bushing die into the 4-jaw, cut 'er off and ran this in....... and the inside of that die looks like a MIRROR! Absolutely perfect finish.

AND..... I used an old chipped endmill that I winkled up against the greenstone to make a fresh cutting edge. THREE of them actually. Ain't no good to me as a milling cutter ((although it came from my "send out to sharpen" bucket)) But main thing is IT WORKED!

Hallelujah

I have been using a HSS milling cutter as a boring bar for years on my lathe.

Me too. They work great for roughing in the bolt counterbore on barrels for 700's. Ditto on the bolt bushing as mentioned by Dave Tooley. I've also used them when converting regular dies to bushing dies. Great way to remove material quickly.
