Well crap.. I went to pick up some 4198 to begin my 30br loadings.. I guess I just saw the numbers 4198 on the shelf and grabed it.. I had H-4198 written on my list, and always like H powders.. Well I just noticed that I grabed IMR instead..
The chart on the Hogdons site lists IMR right next to their H-4198.. So my obvious question now is, What difference will it make to substitute the two? Has anyone used the IMR-4198 in the 30br??

The IMR might be a longer cut powder and you mightnot be able to get as much as the H4198 into the case.
The IMR probably won't "dump" as well out of a powder measure.

It probably is a longer cut than Hogden as Joe suggested and two burning rate charts I looked at showed it as somewhat slower than H4198 so if you bought more than a couple pounds and can easily return it I would suggest you do so. On the other hand if you just bought a pound or two do not worry about it just shoot it.

Either way it will probably not meter as well through a powder measure as the Hogden

I tried a little IMR 4198 from an old lot that Jeff Summers used so effectively a long time ago in a PPC. With the 30-BR, I found it a touch *faster* than H-4198 (the magical lot of which I still have 7 pounds left), not slower.

So, they are probably pretty close. If you only have a pound or two & it works good, you likely can't get anymore. But if you have 8 pounds, likely it won't shoot so well. That's the law of "the general cussedness of things."

If you decide to give it a try, as with all untried powders, start a little low & work up.

I was in a local gun shop late last year, want to pickup a pound of H4198 to blowout cases and they were out of stock, dealer had 6-8 one pound cans of IMR4198, so knowing Hodgdon had bought them I called the hotline and they(hodgdon) told me the two where a little DIFFERENT but with a little load development they would be pertty close, in short, I bought one, fireformed the 100 pieces of brass then put the rest in my loading locker until needed

Took it back to trade it, but they had no H-4198.. Brought it back home, and gently slipped, tapped, 34 grains into the case, but it was about 1/4" under the top of the case, and when compressed it would not hold my seating depth.. Going back to town today..
