Ground Hog Shoots and a 6BR

About 3 weeks ago I ordered a custom 6 BR with the intent of using it as a varminter (groundhogs). I selected a 1/12 Krieger barrel, BAT action, Jewell trigger and a laminated stock. I chose the 1/12 with the thought of shooting 75 or 80 grain bullets. I've since been thinking about trying some local groundhog shoots at 600 yards. Is an 80 grain bullet sufficient for 600 yard work?
Should I have gone to a 1/10 twist. Is a 1/10 too much for a 75 grain pill.
It may not be too late.

Having said that, Berger advertises that a 10-twist barrel will stabilize the 95-grain Berger VLD, and Randy Robinett says it will stabilize the BIB 95-grain FB, and I think it may, just may, stabilize the 100-grain Clinch River & bullets of equal length.

No, a 10-twist isn't "too fast" for a 80-grainer. It's not "too fast" for a 65 grain bullet either, though accuracy may drop .050 to .100 when shooting a 5-shot group. Doubt the groundhogs would care.

If it is too late, try & get some 80-grain Fowlers, and/pr talk to Randy about the 95-grain BIBs. & BTW, if the match has distances of 100, 300, and 600 yards & is anything like the Hickory shoot, most times you lose it at 100 and win it at 300. Hard to make up for poor 100 & 300 yard scores at the long distance.

I shoot Berger 95vld's at groundhog matches out to 600yds. My 6BR is a 9 Twist Kreiger, to shoot the 108 VLD's you need an 8. It also shoots 66 Fowlers extremely well for short range.

I have a 6BR 12 tw barrel for my Hall action, shoots the 80 gr super, see http://www.6mmbr.com/Schronce600.html. I have not shot this barrel in a 600 yd Benchrest match. But I have shot the 80 gr Fowler's in my 6BRX barrel, and they shoot fine at 600.

If varmint shooting is the main shooting, A faster twist will cost you speed with the lighter bullets, they will shoot great, but will run slower than a 12 or 14 tw. I thing you would be fine with a 12 tw for 600 yds, but you may want to add a 8 tw barrel if you get heavy into 600 BR.
