2017 Dave Quervreaux Recognition Match

Well, the weather could have cooperated just a little for the first match of the year. Last week the temperature was in the upper 60’s right up until our fun match on Friday when the wind turned and brought temperatures in the low 30’s. The wind and cold was the theme through the entire weekend, but now as I write this report on Monday the temperatures are back in the upper 60’s and the wind is gone! The weather gods must of thought that we needed more of a challenge.
We have used this first match of the year to honor a fallen member of our bench rest community in the past, but we were fortunate enough to not have anyone that met that criteria this year. We took advantage of this to recognize a member of the Bench Rest Rifle Club that has given so much to our sport. Dave Quervreaux has been a member of our club since the mid-1950’s! He is a bench rest shooter from the infancy of the sport. He was also one of the driving forces of the completion of our current facility after the move from the previous location in 1994. Dave was involved in the design and construction of the original ranges, and I am probably biased, but he helped to build one of the nicest shooting facilities in the country. Dave joined us for dinner Saturday night, and he even returned on Sunday to hand out the medals to the match winners.
Wayne Corley started out hot with a decisive win on Friday night’s fly shoot. Little targets and lots of winds made for an interesting match!
Saturday brought in temperatures in the low 30’s and wind out of the west at 20-25 knots, and 30 brave shooters. We started with 100 LV. Bill Cook was able to pick through the conditions for a small group of .168. Mark Harpenau was third with an agg of .3354, second was Jerry Kloeppel with a .3246, and winner of the LV 100 was Robert Jacobs with a pretty big margin of .3016.
We shot HV 100 on Saturday afternoon. Jason Cohen, in his second group match ever, missed the club record by .001 when he shot a .066! Robert Jacobs was third with a .3060, Jason Cohen was second with a .2988, and Wayne Corley won the agg with a .2742.
On Sunday we moved the targets out to 200 yards. The temperature was around 30 degrees at the start and didn’t warm much as the day went on. The wind was lighter than on Saturday, but with a more challenging switchy tailwind.
Brett Stroud with his Grinch had the small group with a .306. Third place went to Brett as well with a .3537. Second place was Dave Coots with a .3055, and winner of the HV 200 with a commanding lead was Greg King, also with his Grinch, and a .2642.
We finished the match with LV 200. Chet Whitebread had the small group with a .353. Third place was Bill Cook with a .3804, second went to Dean Stroud, the inventor of the Grinch, with a .3674, and Greg King won again with a .3605.
Top five for the 2-Gun were, fifth Bill Cook with a .3972, fourth was Ron Hoehn with a .3880, third was Mark Harpenau with a .3801, second was Robert Jacobs with a .3723, and the winner of the 2017 Dave Quervreaux Recognition Match was Greg King with a grand aggregate of .3363.
Thanks again to everyone that made the journey to St. Louis to shoot this match. We really appreciate all of those that make the effort to come to our matches. Next match is the start of the Mississippi Valley Regionals. It is a 4-gun, with all of the shooting at 100 yards on April 8-9th.
Thanks,
Joe

Congratulations Greg.

Joe, thank you for running another excellent match.

Joe, I don't quite remember the elevated temperatures you quoted. Also didn't mention the low teens windshield. In the spirit of marketing and BR promotion, I won't say anything tho.

Mark

I believe Joe's weather forecasting is about as reliable as a certain stock maker's delivery times.

Later
Dave
