In the video the range rod was put in a keyless chuck I believe.
Does the rod that the indicator rides on rotate or just the bushing in the barrel.
 
Furthermore I must point out that the rod doesn't FLOAT in space while the bearing wobbles around. In my (limited) experience with this method the combination of keyless chuck, gravity, misalignment etc ensures a very small preload on the rod...... maybe this is because I suck but I doubt it. This incidental preload ensures an accurate reading since the bushing is always bottomed out on one side of the bore. (IMO :D)

That has been my experience as well. In fact I make sure there is a tiny bit of preload.
