Gluing barrel rather than action

If I recall correctly, some of the original glue-ins had the barrel (only) glued to the stock. Obviously makes it harder to change barrels; were there any other disadvantages?

Gluing in a portion of the barrel and freefloating the action and the rest of the barrel would be about the same as using a barrel block. However, to me, not being able to change barrels easily would be enough of a drawback that I personally wouldn't want to go that route. I built a rail gun top once with a front barrel block and took it the Nationals. Larry Kuse told me that it had been tried years ago and didn't work particularly well and that was about my experience with it as well. There is usually a reason most generally something that has been tried in the past has been discarded. Most times it's not worth revisiting. Larry Sharnhorst was shooting a Scoville stocked rifle at Midland this year at the Nationals that had what amounted to a mini barrel block in front of the action with the Bat action freefloated and the rest of the barrel freefloated. It shot very well. The barrel block was what amounted to a set of 2 rings holding the barrel to the stock. You might try something like that as it would be easier to change the barrel than gluing the barrel directly to the stock.

Thanks Mike, I suspect I was just trying to be lazy building a rimfire.

BTW, barrel blocks work very well on point-blank BR rifles. I have one our old friend Tooley built for me (I insisted, he accommodated) that was legal under the old NBRSA rules. Ain't nobody in the SE region afraid of me, but they did respect that .30 BR HG, even when it came to shooting groups.

So are you saying that you have a HV 30BR in a scoville barrel block stock? Any other type of recoil lug in that system? i would recon not but i am seriously thinking about doing something similar with a hall action in a robertson stiller stock. I want to find someone to put a barrel block in my robertson stock and free float the action much like larrys gun. I dont know if this is a good idea or not but i like to try different things. I first need to find someone that would be willing to do this for me. My regular bed man, tom M doesnt want to mess with the idea. Any ideas? I would really like to talk with someone about this. i have had this idea for a while now. Lee

PS i am going to start a thread about this if anyone cares to share, sorry i didnt mean to hijack the OP. Lee

Didn't say that at all. I said Dave Tooley made me the block. Quite different than the Scoville. The scope rail is on the block, for one thing. He also chambered the barrel. I bedded it in a Obeche wood laminated wood stock.
