i want to get into the world of long range competition and f-class after some research seems to be the one i want. i plan on attending some matches and checking out the equipment. but i still could use any advice from anyone. one question i have right off the start is whether i already posses a good action to start with. how is a savage model 11 short action? i have a 223 that i got for free. the barrel has been cut down 3 inches and the stock crudely hand carved to the point where it is absolutely hideous. the thing that appeals to me is that i can do a barrel and bolt face swap myself to get any cartridge i desire. but what about a trigger would this be a good start?

Get a hold of Fred Moreo at Sharpshooters supply. Let him true it and put his 2oz trigger on it I think he charges $300 for that.
You may want to check arround a bit more. You can get some pretty good deals on used guns with custom action now, I did. Honestly a trued Savage can shoot as good as any but you maybe better served with a custom action from the beginning. Good luck either way.

I would look at a 1x8 twist barrel in 223 and shoot what yhou have. Spend your money on good optics. Later you can change rifles. What distance f-class are close by? A 223 works well at 600yds. The Aussies use a lot of 223 even at 1000 yd.
