25 Inch Benchmark barrel reverse taper 2 groove 17.5T .825 at muzzle
Hoehn tuner Pappas slider Jewell trigger McMillan edge stock 40X action.
I live in No.California in the bay area.
I shoot SK Rifle Match for practice and Eley Black for matches.
My question is I can't find the tuning for both ammo????
We mostly shoot 100 yards benchrest matches and yes I do shoot
with flags.
Any help on tuner weights or slider adjustment would be greatly appreciated.
I have shot boxes of both ammo with no results.
Thanks,
Bones

Describe the groups you are getting. Are the bullets stacked (vertical) or are they just all over the place. Also do they appear to be the same shape when you shoot 50 yds?

17.5 twist

Take free advise for what it's worth. I've worked with 2 different 17.5 twist Benchmark barrels and found them to be difficult in cooler weather. For some reason they tended to keyhole at 50 yards so by 100 yards I can imagine they would be a bit erratic. Another shooter at our club had the same problem with his 17.5. I have used 4 or five of the Benchmark 16.5 in 2 groove, three groove and six groove barrels and they have all been really good shooters.

Twist Rate & Ammo

The 17.5 Twist won`t shoot the EPS Bullet unttil it gets 80+ degrees for me.I have a Davis 2 groove 17.5 in a Hall,I have some Eley OSP that it likes and some Lupua gold box that it likes well. The round nose bullet is all that it will shoot in cooler (70 and Down) with out keyholeing. The first time I shot it, it keyholed the first 5 shots. I was sick! The 17.5 `s are finickey for sure.

Thanks guys for your advise.
I should call Gene Davis and have the barrel changed to a 16.5 twist.
As group goes, very inconsistent, at 100 yards with Eley black
3 out of 10 five shot group will be good the rest all over the paper.
Haven't seen any keyhole.

I use one and it didnt like any weights,it sounds like your not tuned. It should shoot eley and lapua well on same tuner setting when you are dead nuts tuned, not as easy to find as it sounds.you might look for somthing between 175 and 250 with no weight, mine is at 214.it would be pure luck if this worked for you being different guns, but that range might be worth a try.good luck:D

I have a Gene Davis 17 3/4 twist and it does superb!!!. I win more matches than I lose. And i use Wolf ME. Wont shoot Eley unless it is the OSP. Like the other fellow said. Use a round nose bullet. It should be fine and I'm sure Gene will say the same. I'm sure he'll change the barrel for you too. When it get hot, I'll try some Eley. Above 80!!!

Another thing....Those reverse taper barrels seem to like the mid barrel tuners too. And Tune it! Sound like its just not tuned well. Sould not need the weight either, but maybe you do, just don't think so.

There has been more 2500's shot with a 17-3/4'' 2 groove than any other barrel and they will shoot in cold weather if they are tuned right. Not trying to be a smart_ss but it is the truth. JlG

The 17 3/4, 2 groove benchmark barrels have shot more 2500's than any other barrel. I use the round nose eley or Eley Pistol ammo in mine and it has never keyholed.
