Gene Beggs' Rimfire Report

Last year, there was a great deal of discussion on the Centerfire forum about tuners, muzzle devices and other topics of interest to both centerfire and rimfire shooters. Several months ago, I said I would build some rimfire rifles in '09. Here's the latest on that project. :D

For several weeks, I have been very busy with two projects; the Ultralite stock and three rimfire rifles, two Turbo's and one Hall. The Ultralite stock is now available for the round-bottom actions. (That's a story in itself )

The Hall action will be sent to Meyers next week for the barrel index bushing mod; the two Turbos are nearing completion. Both are equipped with Beggs' Barrel Index bushings installed by Bill Myers who also chambered the Shilen barrels. I installed the dual-ring-type tuners, Ultralite aluminum stocks and Jewell triggers. They really look sharp with the black anodized stocks and polished actions. I will begin tunnel tests next week. Stay tuned for the results.

By the way I must confess, I found the Hall and Turbo rimfire actions complex and demanding to work with. When I first began, I quickly realized, I had a long way to go. I am most grateful to Allan Hall, Flash Ebert and Bill Meyers for their help. I couldn't have done it without you guys. :D

your projects

gene

are you a smith and did those other smiths volunteer to help you out with your projects. i must say i admire people such as this if this is true. as i read your comments did you find these extremely complicated to work with?

true gentleman all

this is good news

say

any pictures to share with us,

and will you bring a stock or 2 to the super shoot (may want ot hide it on the old farts who just shoot centerfire, they may not fully apprieciate the newness of the rimfire game an what it might bring for enjoyment to thier life)

just kidding

and would the stock fit the new stiller rimfire action, (a 40x clone)

50 yard tunnel

Does this mean your going to finish the 50 yard tunnel? You need one for RF Tuning.

Bob, I would describe myself as a hobbyist rather than a smith, but I do take my work seriously. When unsure about something, I seek the advice of experts. Flash Ebert, Allan Hall and Bill Meyers have been very helpful and have always answered my questions honestly and professionally.

Flash and I, both grew up here in Odessa, so he's always close by if I need help. When I said I find rimfire more complex and demanding than centerfire, I was referring to the actions, barrel tenons, chambers, extractors, firing pins, etc. Maybe it's just me, but the little rimfires seem delicate and complicated compared to centerfire actions. It's been an interesting study. :)

Stay tuned,

Hi Jeff

Yes, I'll bring some Ultralite stocks to the Super Shoot. They will fit the Stiller 40X clone as well as most other 1.350 diameter round actions.

Hi Fred

No, I do not plan to build a 50 yard tunnel; I just cannot justify the expense. I plan to test the rimfire rifles in the 100 yard tunnel. What do you and others think of this? What kind of groups should I expect at 100 yards with the rimfires?

Gene, I don't think many of us have a clue what it should shoot at 100 yards. That's why I never have came out there, I don't think it would help me. If I were you I would go the the gun club out there and shoot 50 yards at a ARA or PSL target. We all test rifles and ammo outside because that is where we shoot most of the time.

what about target frames at 50

for rimfire guys in the tunnel

Jeff

Gene,
We’ve shot group at 50 & 100 for a long time down here and the national records say smallest group at 100 is .163 and 5 target agg .601 and this is all outside.

I wouldn't think dialling in the tuner at 100 indoors would be that bad a thing for a rimfire. It’s something I wish I could try.

50 vs 100

Gene:
We've shot @100 for years, with our Schuetzen rifles, and did well. Sometimes 10 shots under a dime off the rest. Under an inch with our best ammo and best conditions. That same rifle wouldn't do as well at 50. I'd much rather test at the same distance I plan to compete at.

Gene,

You are a very creative man. Testing at 100 yards just won't mean the same as testing at 50 yards, the distance that we all shoot (consider testing centerfire at 50 yards or 150 yards). I have not seen your tunnel but I have heard that it is first class. I contend that for about the cost of one of your wind probes not to mention the cost of a custom rimfire action you can come up with a 50 yard frame even if it means a bullet trap to go with it. I would be glad to help you with the project if you want my help but I know that you are as inventive as any of us.

Gene,

What is the current setup you use for a 100-yard tunnel? Simply something that blocks wind and keeps the atmospheric conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.) the same from muzzle to target?

Any photos of the Ultralite?

Gene, agree with testing at 50. You have a lot of testing to do with indexing. Build yourself a bullet trap put it on a stand and would take little in the way of lighting up the target.

your rifle

all i can say is this is a very complex operation. gene are you doing all your own lathe work and such?

this is interesting for sure!
