Gamo airgun

This isn't a BR questions and I apologize, but I figure you guys will know. I am buying my 10 year old a better airgun for his birthday to shoot on our property. He wants one of the 1000 fps 177s. I have only looked at the Gamo. I want something with a decent trigger. He has shot several bricks through my Sako 22 on the bench. My question is can a 10 yr cock one of these things? The ones I have been in the store are attached so that you can't remove them. I know they state adult only and some reviews said their 14-16 yrs old couldn't cock them. Any suggestions for a $200-300 beginner rifle? He will many shoot cans and targets on our property.

Thanks for any suggestions, tiny

First off, the 1000 fps is overstated by all manufactures. Most with a decent weight pellet will maybe shoot around 900fps . You Don't want to be shooting the Gamo PBA light weight pellets in a spring gun . They are too light and will cause premature spring failure . Stick with something around 8 grains in a .177. Next, unless you're going to change the trigger out in a Gamo, it's going to be tough to hit something with it. I've owned several springers before I switched over to PCP and for the money it's hard to beat the German made RWS 34 Panther . And the best place I've found to get one is at Midsouth Shooter supply . http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000622166022 . The Panther has a decent trigger out of the box and if he puts the rifle up against his body and pulls with both hands , he should be able to cock it. Make sure (as he and anyone should ) hold onto the barrel with one hand as he loads his pellet into the breech. You don't want a barrel flying back up and hitting him and/or slapping the stock , damaging it and bending the barrel . If you are going to scope the rifle , it will need an adjustable scope mount or shim the rear ring to compensate for what they call barrel droop. It's a well made rifle that will last for years . If he's small for his age the length of pull maybe a problem , but it would be with any adult air rifle . It is a long rifle , but is a little lighter than most spring guns . I hope this helps. kirby

Try the IZH/ Baikal 61, very good accuracy and an excellent trigger. the cocking is a very easy sidelever. and it looks cool also. the only problem is a short dovetail, and the scope shifting back after shooting. there may be a good mount you can find but it shoots great with open sights. I got mine at pyramyd airgun mall online.
