Gallatin Gun Club - UBR match 9 7 13

The Gallatin Gun Club held the UBR TN State Championship yesterday (Sept 7). 31 rifles went to the line with 12 Factory Class rifles and an equal 12 Custom Class rifles. The day started with a 200 yard match, light winds and mild temps. Though the mirage was tricky, there were some excellent scores. When we moved in to 100 yards at mid day the breeze picked up and the mirage got worse. From time to time most battled that odd condition where the flags showed one direction and the sighters showed the opposite. It was far from a trigger pull.

Factory
100 yards – Chester Bradford
200 yards – Ross Brown
GA – John Kruzan - 492

Modified
100 yards – Tony Epley
200 yards- Bobby Cagle
GA – Bobby Cagle - 503

Custom
100 yards - Bobby Cagle
200 yards – Mike Ezell
GA – Mike Ezell - 507

Unlimited
100 yards- Rick Fox
200 yards – Rick Fox
GA – Rick Fox - 514

Our next “local” match will be at the Two Brother Rifle Range in Auburn KY on September 21st. The National UBR Championship will be held at the Buck Creek Gun Club in Whetstone, KY on Friday & Saturday September 27th & 28th. The next match at Gallatin will be on October 5th and will include a 300 yard match.

It was another great day of shooting and good company. Thanks for running a good match, Rick. The smoked chicken and all the fixin's were tough to beat, too.

Format is a 24-target match, with the "X" worth 11 points?

That would be correct. A total of 264 points is possible for a yardage. At this point in time, no one has shot a 264. The current record for 100 yds stands at 263. The best score for 200 yards is 254 IIRC. The current record for a GA is 514 ( unlimited class). Plenty of room to make your mark in the record books.

Rick, I just noticed that the 514 "high grand aggregate" seems to be yours, as shown in the first post in this thread. So I'll take that as out-of-reach. Just out of curiosity, was that done with a fairly hot .22, like a .22 PPC?

Charles, here's the full results and equipment list(at least caliber). Rick has a spectacular 220 Beggs, and shoots it well. To win the unlimted class, you'll have to beat him. He ain't gonna make it easy on anybody.http://ultimatebenchrest.com/results-2013/aug-sept-oct

I think you should give a trophy for multiplying the bullet's BC by it's velocity. I think I could win that. I can get a "1920" if I have to ;-)

Charles,
As Mike said, I shoot a 220 Beggs in an ancient sleeved XP action and very old McMillan stock. I have no idea what the BC is, but the velocity is around 3500. It has shot very well for me a few times, but if the wind is up things get difficult. The score is definitely not out of reach, but it will take some effort to get there. There were at least 3-4 more x's that I should have picked up Saturday as the extra points were there for the taking. What can I say, it's never enough :)

Rick, maybe, just maybe, 5 years ago I could have given you a run for your money. In all seriousness, I used up the last bit of my hard competitive effort getting the last couple points for the Long Range Marksman jacket -- that's the 1000 yard equivalent of the Precision Rifleman jacket Mr. Nader just achieved. Since 2009 though, both the fire & health haven't been there. Your record is out of reach for me.

Back to pre-match joshing -- I can shoot a .610 BC bullet at 3,200 fps. 10-shot groups are in the .250 region at 100 yards -- extreme lows around flat .2, highs around flat .3. But as we all know, *competition* requires more than a capable rifle.

A higher BC bullet only helps with very little mistakes, and you're still dependent on the other guys making them too. That said, if your barrel has a sufficient twist rate, there are some very good, higher BC .224s available -- usually from Berger, say around 60 grain -- that outperform most short range 6mm bullets. If you're not aware of it, take a look at some of T.J. Jackson's older articles in Precision Shooting, I believe reprinted in the Benchrest Shooting Primer, covering some informal testing he did shooting benchrest at Midland, Texas. It is true that it is harder to make a good bullet on a longer jacket. It is false that it can't be done.
