Gain twist

This will be considered as my first post at Benchrest.com. I am a 37yr old Swedish benchrest shooter who is doing his second year in the best sport I have ever been fortunate to try out. I have a lot to learn and for me it is only one way to go - all in! My buddies in Sweden would not say anything else that I am 100% focused on "benchrest" and I am in for the long run...my goal for this year is to take a place in the Swedish national team for the WC in France next year! A lot to ask of a second year rookie, but I am doing pretty well so far at the competitions  That said, you now know a little more about me - do not hesitate to ask if there is anything you would like to know

I would humbly ask your opinion of what gain twist (Bartlain) is applicable shooting both the 6PPC (68gr) and 22-100 (52gr).
Secondly I would like to have some honest good opinions and experience of your choice of two 22 cal bullets in 52gr to have at home to try out - if one does not work the other might. There are not much experience on this side of the pond shooting 22cal in benchrest.

A little background of our pain to understand our situation: In the nordic countries we need to order our barrels and bullets at least a year in advance as it takes a very loong time and you are never sure when your items would show up. A Krieger barrel when it arrives cost 400EUR, and then your gunsmith has not started to work on it yet! Usually we try to get 3-5000pc of bullets in one lot to make sure you have a good stash, as you can not pick up the telephone and have more delivered in a few weeks. That is why your input would be of great value for me, knowing or giving me good ideas of two bullets to go with.

Thank you kindly for reading so far. I look forward to be a part of this forum

Kind regards/ Sonny Olsson

Hi Sonny,

Welcome to Benchrest.
I used to use 52gn Fowlers but ran out of them when Jef's health was failing and had to switch to something else. However, I hear very good things of Bill Scheider (sp?) who now has Jef's dies and is making bullets just as good as when Jef was making them. I would be happy to use them again.
Right now I am using the 52gn Watsons which Bart Sauter is making. They have set several national records for me so I guess that says plenty about their quality. Also, Bart is a great guy to deal with.
I am shooting them out of 1 in 14 twist Shilens so can't tell you how they would work in a gain twist.

Best of luck.
Peter

Thank you kindly Peter for welcoming me to this forum and letting me know your thoughts of the 22cal-wonderful. I have had my eyes on Bart's 52gr Match Bullet, but I should perhaps have a look at his Watsons insted. My second choice has been Cheek, who is obtaining export licens as we speak.
Anyone who can share knowledge of the gain twist pls let me know, if not I will give them a call and see what to find out.

Take care Peter an enjoy your wonderful NZ winter to come

Kind regards/ Sonny

By the way, I would like to get in touch with someone who has been shooting the 22-100 shooter and would like to share some experience over PM.

Take care/ Sonny

Hi sonny and welcome""
The bullets mentioned are all very good. It really depends on what particular shape {makers} That works best in your rifle.
Some rifles like one brand over the other due to the ogive pressure ring or final shape {bearing surface}
I have tried one gain twist barrel in the 6ppc from bartlein. It stated at 14 twist and ended at 13.5 twit at 22inches..
This is a L/V barrel. I shoots excellent. I have been playing with twist rates for my own bullets. I'm trying to find the best stability for the shapes of bullets i make. I started with a staright 14 twist , went to a 13.5 and finally the gain twist. all shot really well due to the quality of the barrels Harts shillens and bartlein. I also have a lilja 15 twist i am testing.
The only question for mr at this point is whats happening with the gain twist. Is it the actual gain giving me the great accuracy or just the exit twist at 13.25. I have a 13.25 twist bartlein Left to test. So far i can tell you both the 13.5 and gain twist are doing the best for me. I would try to get a few hundred of each brand bullet you would like to shoot and see what shoots best for your particular rifle. Then order a larger order with the same lot jacket
