Is anyone using one of these??

I'm stuck on Shilen's 4R's, so I have not even looked into one of the GT barrels from Bartline.

You had one for sale in the classifieds yesterday, why don't you thread it up and chamber it and see how it shoots? That's the fun of it all anyway.

Ken,

I'm not gonna get into "this" on a public forum.

The last two Shilen barrels I got, both new 4R's, shoot so darn good that I'm now just having an automatic deduction from my paycheck sent straight to Wade over at their shop. They are that good in my opinion.

I would just like to help someone out who has been wanting to try one of the Bartline GT barrels without needing to wait.

I was curious as to who is shooting them and what they think, but I will not be touching my 10.5 Hall or Anschutz 1913 silhouette rifle any time soon. No way.

Might I talk you into it..???:D Come on Ken, only $383 + shipping.

Stev,
Nothin' to get into, I was just trying to coerce you into trying it out and letting us know how it worked:). I got many barrels now! I just fitted a Benchmark up yesterday on one of my 40X's. I have a Shilen that I like and a Lilja as well, both 4 grooves, and I have 2 more 4 grooves on order(one is an experiment), and 3 Benchmarks that I like really well on other rifles.
I don't need it, but I'm sure it'll make someone good barrel and they won't have to wait to get it. You should not have a problem selling it.

Well,

If it's still in the rack this winter, and nothing in the shop to work on, I may start cuttin' on it.

Thanks for the help though.

I will say that I havn't seen much data on their long range performance, such as shooting 100 meters, and I'm curious as to if they'd shine at that distance.

Problem is that I can't make weight with the barrel at 0.960" straight, and I tried to turn down a barrel, one time. Never gonna do that again. I may as well set my wallet on fire for all the good I am at turning down barrels on our machine.

I could send it off to Ed and have it turned down, but before I'm all done it will be a $600 barrel blank. I'd still have to chamber and crown it, and then it might run with my Shilen, might.

Hmmmm......

Bartlein Barrels

I don't have any personal experience with the gain twist barrels, but Mike Ross and Jeffrey Madison have both played with them and am sure would be happy to share,
http://forums.delphiforums.com/Smallbore/start .
I do have two Bartlein barrels that are both 5 groove 16" twist that both shoot exceptionally well. Bartlein can build you any combination that you want, they are very busy and are very honest about delivery time. If someone is thinking about a barrel, go to Bartlein's web site and read about their rifling machinery, it is the absolute state of the art. Alot of great barrel makers out there, you can add Bartlein to the list.

Hope it finds a good home. I have four of their centerfire barrels and they shoot just ducky.

Anyone else shootin' a GT...??

I'm I gonna have to take one for the team here and set this up for a project in the magazine?

Steve:
Back in the Late 60's to the Mid 70's, I shot against several GT barrels. I don't remember the mfg at the time, but they were very good barrels. The procedure has moved from place to place, and the last time I ordered one, the company, Gain Twist, said they were out of the business and had sold to a company in Wisconsin. I gave up on the notion and went with other notable companies, and have been very happy. I hear there are a few CF guys using them, but I don't know their success.

Have spoken with them months ago about ordering 2 barrels. Called them back recently and they are backlogged till the end of the year. I believe there are some centerfires shooting very well with them.

I talked to Frank for quite a while about them. was considering a 17-16 1/2 or a 16 1/2-16 but I never decided since I had 2 other projects going on already. Given how hot the CF barrels are going I'd like to see a couple more out there right now.

I have a Bartlein 16.5 to 16 GT barrel that I have been using for a year to test a stock that I build. I have fit several Bartlein barrels in a straight 16 and have been impressed with their performance so I thought I would experiment with a gain twist. Because the bore slugged so well I decided to remove the muzzle choke, cut the length to 24 inches and put an EPS chamber in it for testing.

I shot it off the bench and found it would hold approximately 1/4 inch at 50 yards consistently with Eley Black box and Blue box (Team) EPS ammo with any lot number. Because I shoot prone I tested it at 100 yards and was pleased when it would reliably hold the X ring in reasonable conditions. I tested it once purposely in a strong, 10 to 20 mph switching wind, and again was impressed with it's 100 yard 10 ring performance. I really can't say there is a "wind bucking" feature to the gain twist but it sure looked like it at the time.

I indexed the barrel when I installed it and I have since changed the chamber to a 52D with no loss of performance using a round nose bullet. I does seem to perform better than expected using mid grade SK Match ammunition at 50 yards.

Bartlein uses a premium steel that machines very well and the good performance of the barrel may just be the grade of steel and the uniform bore they provide. Mike Ross has/had four of the Bartlein 16.25 to 15.9 barrels and will fit them on competition rifles that hopefully I can review how well they perform.

I do a lot of testing off the bench but remember this is a prone stock with a front plate and rear bag rider added so the performance is going to be compromised and not what would be expected if using a benchrest stock.
