FUN-fire and newbys in San Angelo

When was the last time your club had 4 newbys show up on the same day?

We had our regular 50/50 UL matches for March on Saturday March 6th at the San Angelo Gun Club with a light turnout because it was misting rain earlier in the morning and this was not a SOTY match. There were four shooters for the UL 50/50 matches and five for the FUN-fire matches.

We had four shooters from our silhouette bunch who had never shot benchrest competition before. They all appeared to enjoy themselves even though they had low power scopes, lightweight rifles, sandbag rests, and Federal bulk ammo. They shot fairly good for the first time out and I believe they will be back with better rests and ammo. You can see the beginnings of an arms race. The winner was John Pormann with a 245, 245, and a 248. FUN-fire target.

The shooting and scoring of two different matches at the same time came off without a hitch.

The new FUN-fire shooters pitched in and helped with the range chores just like the rest of us. One of them even offered to help with the scoring and we accepted.

It is interesting to note that we would not even have had enough shooters for a match with just four. FUN-fire saved the day for us.

Sounds like it may be working for you. Hopefully it will catch on in other parts of the country as well. I see one of the clubs up here is giving the fun fire matches a try this summer. Always looking for new shooters.

BTW, four shooters is the minimum required for a match.
