I am looking to purchase my first front rest and I am looking for recommendations in the 300 to 400 range. Also would be interested in a good used rest. I will be shooting a 6mmbr in a tooley mbr stock. Thanks for your help!

Sinclair has always been good to us in the BR community. They have many options at Good Prices... They would be my first choice in that Range for the rifle and stock you have mentioned.

look in the classified ads here at the top of the page.
usually a few for sale.

I would highly recommend the cowan rest. Contact Joe at jcowan1@aasdcat.com Joe and his class at Altoona Technical school build these rests as a class project. it sells for around $250 delivered and every penny of the proceeds goes either to fund tools for the graduating students to keep or other charitable causes in their neighborhood. It is a very nice rest with a windage top.

Note: the basic rest does not include the rear speedscrew shown in top view.

Dick ...

I have a Cowan rest myself and love it. I was contemplating ordering another one and spoke to Joe on the wait time. He's now taking orders for April of 2011! Yes, 2011! :(

I guess the program is being very successful .
Like the saying goes "Good things are worth the wait". Unfortunately this is very little consolation for a person needing a front rest for the upcoming season.
There was a Hart Rest in the classifieds that looked like a steal to me and I just looked and it was already sold. I am afraid I am zero help today.

Whew... Those Cowan rest look great. I can't wait that long for one though. That would be a fantastic deal. Keep the recommendations coming. I am new to benchrest and don't know all the different kinds of rest available.

Thanks,

Where do you live? Nothing specific, but if we knew a general area there is likely someone that lives close that could help on a more personal level. "Find a mentor," that advise was given to me early on, I am glad I followed it. Hope you find a good rest. Bro.D

I have been researching this subject for a while, the Sinclair's are indeed a good bet (and I have been able to shoot off one). Also, the Shade Tree is a great deal for a co-ax style, just add a base (the Hart or Sinclair would be good). The Sinclair will run about $370, the Shade Tree is around $375 + the cost of a base (figure around $200).

These are new cost, if you watch the classified here and have a bit of luck, there ARE some good deals. Farley has a compact (top only) that runs around the same price as the Shade Tree, have seen (missed out on) a couple of sweet deals here for a Sinclair with windage top. If you have time, keep watching, if more immediate need I would go with either the Sinclair (non-coax) or Shade Tree (co-ax).

and yes, I did like the Cowan...but hope it is not Apr of 2011 before I find a rest  (there was one that was listed in the classifieds, but it did not last long at all).

Well, here's my thoughts

I've had a SEB. Had trouble adjusting the tension to the gun weight. It was always jerky and never consistent. I sold it. Haven't owned a Farley, but have played with them. I think they are probably great if you wanna spend that kind of money. I now have a J and J ($800) and really like it. But I also bought an el cheapo Caldwell Fire Control Joystick rest and REALLY like it. I must admit, you might get laughed at when you go to a match... but the rest has a nice joystick action to it and you can get one for $190. If I had it all to do over again, I would just buy a Fire Control and be happy and a little richer. Gives you another $600 to spend on the other good stuff.

Thanks for the help fellas.. I found a sinclair bottom with a fudd windage top. I think that will suit my needs well. Thanks for the help and the recommendations...
