Front Rest Question

I am trying to pounded my front bag into shape. It is giving me fits trying to keep the bag level. Bag is a Protektor on a Sinclair rest. I have a 3" piece of lumber that I am using, and have pounded the bag into level, side-to-side, and front-to-back. Now if I can only get it to keep shape. I have heard of some soaking the bag in water, and then forming. Do many of you do this? If so, what is the procedure? Please give me any tips on how to get the front bag formed into a level surface....

Thanks,
Brent

Brent,
Level is nice, but not at the cost of having a rock hard front( or rear) bag. I like a moderately filled front bag, where I can set the rifle down in there, slide it back and forth a couple of times and shazam ! level. If my front bag takes a set and becomes rock hard, tossed shots are shure to follow. I'll take it out of the rest, beat it on the bench a couple of times stick it back in all fluffed up and I'm back in business.Your rear bag should have a little give as well,so you can tamp your butt stock down in there ever so slightly.
good shooting,
Joel

Check this out from Benchrest Central's Home page FAQs, Tips, Tricks, & Info, What do you do to make your rifle slide smoothly in the bags and how do you set up your rests on the bench? - Multiple: http://www.benchrest.com/FAQ/6.5.shtml. Lots of good stuff around here! :)

I shoot longrange but here goes how I set up my front bag.
I put as much heavy sand in it as will fit.
I then spray the bag until it is dripping wet with spray starch you buy at the grocery store.
I then take 3 or 4 paper towels and soak them dripping wet in the same spray starch and drape them into the front bag.
I next put the rifle in the bag and pound on it until everything is level.
I let it sit for atleast a day or more then remove the gun and paper towels and let it dry.
The bag will now hold its shape and fit that particular stock.
You can now add talc or baby powder to slick things up if thats what you normaly do.
I take the blue backing material off of the stock tape and using double sided carpet tape to hold it onto the bag.I have tried every way posted on this forum to make my guns slide easier and this method of using the blue backing material is the best by a large margin. It might actually be to slick for most shooters.

Here's the easiest way to get a front bag to hold its shape. Buy an Edgewood front bag like the one pictured below. They're designed to hold their shape. Sinclair carries them or you can go directly to Edgewood. :)
