I am in the process of finishing 2 FN barreled actions in 338 Win Mag and 264 Win Mag. How much does the feed rails and box mag have to be opened up so the bolt will feed without any problems. I know the extractor and bolt face need to be altered also. Thanks in advance for your eeplies. Les.

The exact amount is measured in "GO SLOW" and keep trying the feed with the firing pin removed. Hone a little and try a lot. All ways easier to take it off, than put it back on.:D

FN Mauser feed rails/ magazine enlargement

I barreled a 30-06 size FN Mauser to 338 Mag last year and of course had to open the bolt face, but the feeding was resolved by opening up the feed ramp area to center the cartridge in the chamber as it fed from the magazine. I polished the rails and bolt face and worked the extractor to have .004" outward movement when holding the cartridge rim. I also put a generous radius on the bottom edge of the extractor. I used a PAB aluminum magazine from Brownell's as I cut the forward cylindrical extension off and fitted a pillar at the front. I couldn't bring myself to cut up a pristine FN trigger guard with the release in the bow. The PAB magazine works good as it is.

Thanks for the response Riflemeister. I did look at the PAB magazine from Brownells. I get most of my supplies from them. I was trying to keep costs low. I will probably cut and weld the original mag. Mine does not have the release in the bow. I put a B-Square release on the floorplate so it ism like my other Mausers. Thanks for the reply. Les.
