Floating my stock this morning...Help Please

just a quick question before I get to far...I have started sanding and doing a little at a time. I have read to sand from front barrel lug forward. Leaving the barrel in front of lug compleatly free from stock and Leaving the wood behind the lug for stability. There is just a bit of contact just forward of fron lug and the last inch at front end of stock. and about how much clearence would be adaquate. I have heard business card thickness, I have seen about 1/8 of an inch on some of the custom guns. I thought I'd shoot for about 1/32 of an inch. And last... should I be able to find a screw handle type torque handle at Sears to set the Lugs the correct torque? I dont have a torque wrench and would prefer screwdriver handle type...

Are the harbor freight one's accurate. They have one here locally but just was not sure about it.

Floating the barrel

You mentioned you were allowing the barrel to touch the end of the forearm. That would seem to defeat the purpose of floating the barrel--to allow it to vibrate without the stock's influence. Also, as to the distance between the barrel and the stock barrel channel, I don't think it makes any difference. What ever the distance, the barrel is resting on air. The amount of air shouldn't have any influence on the barrel, or barrel vibrations. I think the only reason to keep the distance small is it looks better. Just my two cents worth.

Mr. chadflys, Harbor Freight has a 1/4" torque wrench that they run a special on for $14.95 it's not bad, not a Snap-On but pretty dam good. 2 part numbers 2696-5vga or 94735-2vga, they are not on sale at this time and cost19.99 but most any Hot Rod, Car Craft, Super Chevy ect. have a coupon for 20% off of any one item, they go from 20 in.lbs to about 80 in.lbs, I think, Good Luck, Jerry Luck:D
 
I bought a Harbor Freight wrench but its range was to restrictive for my application. It's sitting under my bench in its plastic case, unused.
