( i have asked in the 600/1000 forum, guess it belongs here)

i am (still) building a 1000 yd light gun in 300 win mag.
based on a left hand rem 700 long action.

what is "normal" for mounting ?

i had consider this a switch br/prone gun in two stocks but will listen to reasons for not doing that.

so mount a bedding plate in the stock ?

pillar bed

recoil lug /no lug.......

what ...how is yours done ??

thanks

this is one answer:
I have bedded a number of Remingtons, Savages, FNs, and Rugers and I would pillar bed the action with aluminum pillars and use Devcon Steel Putty, 10110.

I would tape the bottom, sides, and front of the recoil lug and bed the action and the first 1.5" of the barrel including the recoil lug area. The tape on the recoil lug will allow for clearance when the need arises to take the barreled action out and the 1.5" barrel "pad" will help support the barrel.

If you are new at this, and it sounds like you are, be sure that the barreled action is centered in the stock when bedding. I use a few thicknesses of tape on the barrel to assure that it is centered in the forearm and this usually takes care of centering the action - but do a visual check while the bedding is still soft. BE SURE TO USE LOTS AND LOTS OF RELEASE AGENT ON THE ACTION AND BARREL AND TAKE THE TRIGGER OFF THE ACTION WHEN BEDDING.

Just my experience.

and my reply...
george,
thanks for the reply.
i have bedded a few rifles.
i have a blank 1000 master stock.
i'm pretty sure i will let a professional do the stock work.
but i an curious about options for the actual mounting.

your pillars would be to the stock lower metal ?

leave the mag in ?

its the uniquness of the actual mounting....

thanks
mike

I would tape the bottom, sides, and front of the recoil lug No just tape the bottom, the tapered lug is designed to sit tight in its mortice and bed the action and the first 1.5" of the barrel including the recoil lug area. The tape on the recoil lug will allow for clearance when the need arises to take the barreled action out and the 1.5" barrel "pad" will help support the barrel.

BE SURE TO USE LOTS AND LOTS OF RELEASE AGENT ON THE ACTION AND BARRELDont use lots, you need a very thin layer slightly polished off, if it has any actual buildup you are not bedding the exact shape of the action AND TAKE THE TRIGGER OFF THE ACTION WHEN BEDDING.
