First Rimfire

Long story short: Went to the local gun club to site in the 12 gauge slug gun. There was a man concentrating on an odd looking gun (with lots of extra toys and accessories). Not wanting to interrupt him, I waited for a break to strike up a conversation and feel him out. Next thing you know I am sitting at the bench sighting in this AWESOME rimfire gun. Pulled the trigger, knocked the bulls eye out of the park and I AM HOOKED.

Now what? It is highly unlikely that I find find my final gun today. I know, what are your goals: competition, fun, local? Not really sure where it will take me.

I have been lurking and it seems as though a CZ 455 Varmit might be a good gun. Put a $200 scope on it and I will be shooting. But wait. What if I got a good 40X for $1,000. Put a $200 scope on it, and build on it later? Or what about that gun that is already to go, barrel, scope, trigger, etc for $2,000?

Tough decisions, I was hoping that someone would share their experiences and route that they took and what they would do different.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,
It all depends on "how hooked" you are. If you intend to try a match or two this year, then I'd just take what you may already have. If you would like to try a match or two this year and compete, then I'd take a good look at the classified ads on this site. It has been a week or so since I looked but there was some real bargains for a beginning shooter that already have most of the bells and whistles. Where are you located?

Thanks for the replies. Pretty sure "take what you have" will not work. I have a Western Field (?) 22 that was my grandfathers. I also have a M&P15 22. Great fun, but hardly a benchrest queen. I do like some that I have seen. I saw a 40x for $1300 with scope, tuner, and 2 oz trigger. Probably should have just bought it. I am sure there will be more.

I also like buying a 40X and just shooting. The problem is that I think the benchrest matches are over for the season. I will still go out and try to catch some of them shooting. I want to see what they shoot and what they think.

I am in Delaware. The club I go to is in Salisbury, MD.

Thanks again for the help.

check the cabellas in pa (check their gun room on line) at times they will get a real nice target gun and have a nothing price because it is not a hunter , have seen several through the last three years I stop spring and fall in my travels and not cheep guns but real low prices almost bought an anshotz all it needed was a sling and that may have been in the case

that 40x is a good gun have don stith make you a new b/r stock for it some bedding and you are good to go for awhile.

Thanks for the replies. The 40X is looking better all of the time. I can surely sell it if I find something better.

i'd talk to bob finger who shoots at that club, he may be the guy you talked to.
a great guy he'll help you out.

thing about the stith stock keep your old one and if you decide b/r shooting isnt for you take it off put the original one back on. you will need a 2oz shillen trigger also same deal and you should get your costs out of them.

good luck

Yes, Bob Finger is the man. He has already been a lot of help, and I am sure that I will be shooting with him soon!

OK, I have bought a gun. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

I bought a 1411 Anschutz Match 54. I think that it should satisfy my needs for quite a while, as well as be a competitive gun! I took it out for a test ride, and this thing is a TACK DRIVER! Even I could shoot it! LOL

Better start saving some money for the expenses to come!
