Fireforming

I would like to fire form some .20 Vartarg cases that were formed from Lapua .222 s brass.
I don't want to use a bullet or Cream of Wheat. I have Unique available, will it do it and
how much should I use?

Start with 1/2 case and work up. This from Ken Howell, not from me...... but I've used this method a lot. If 1/2 case makes you nervous drop to 1/3 case :) start LOW any road, and with no backing filler 1/3 case is low. My guess is that it'll blow powder all over the lawn.

You can do what you like and probably will, but in my experience with a 20 VT, you may as well load it up and go shoot prairie dogs with it. I seriously doubt you'll see any difference. You can use the pistol powder and not use a bullet or much barrel life, but IMO it's a waste of time and pistol powder.

YMMV,
Rick

Thanks everyone. I want to go the no bullet route as I have to turn necks and hoped
that would give me a more uniform neck to turn.
The chamber is a .232 neck and the brass with bullet seated is .234
Thanks Al, I hoped you would chime in, I think you have done quite a bit of this.
Will a square of toilet paper be a good thing to load on top of the powder?

I use toilet paper when I fireform out the window...... in other words, when it's raining :)

But I'm wicked anal. I stack the squares and cut them all to uniform size (weight) and roll them into little cylinders which I stuff into the necks. The added weight of the paper saves a couple grains of powder. Then I carefully insert each case into the chamber with the same motion/tilt. I've gotten very nice cases this way, no different than the quick and easy "point in the air and pull the trigger" method. I've also used wax plugs and COW with a paper plug, wasn't as happy with either as I am with straight powder. I will never again put COW into a shouldered case.

Straight powder is just clean and residue-free.

Thanks Al, I will give both your methods, paper and no paper, a try.
