i did this first barrel for my shooting buddy, who has never had the pleasure of turning necks. from the way the barrel is shooting from the get go, he shouldn't have to endure the pleasure of neck turning.

the reamer (from Dave Kiff) is a .274 nk. I fire form with pistol powder in a dedicated barrel. i ran the reamer in it to open the neck up from .264.
tamping a small cotton ball in a full case of ball powder forms the round nearly 100 % with 1 shot. (still have to open the neck a little for the first load though). The loaded rounds neck measure .272 from the lot of brass i have.

the bottom line is the barrel shoots fantastic. Now to start on mine, got to get ready for Unaka's 4th of July weekend match.

If any problems arise,, and i bet they won't, i will report,,, right now my plan is to never turn necks again!

A friend commented to me when I was shooting a no-turn neck, "You let Lapua prep your brass for you?" I thought about it and realized that Lapua's quality has fallen off in the past couple of years and there is some variance in case neck thickness these days.

I bought a second Nielson neck turner and an indicator and turn my necks just enough to clean them up. They vary less than .0001 now. It may be that I can't shoot well enough to see the difference but I think that I can.

The idea of not turning case necks is definetly attractive. Maybe the difference in accuracy isn't enough to matter when you throw in conditions. The reason I will continue to turn case necks is because my performance is drastically improved by the confidence I have in my gun. When I pay close attention to detail, which is something I do even more as the competition gets tougher, I feel more ready for anything the competition might throw my way. Most shooters will say that confidence in your equipment is very important. However, what it takes to feel confident varies among different shooters. A good example of this is the fact that I am confident without shooting 6mm.

Why take all that brass off, anyway?

Why not just take them down to 0.270 or 0.269ish or so...
