Federal Ammo Question.

Hi, Comrades!
Usually I shoot Federal HP 36 Grain ammo. This is 550 rds pack from Wal*Mart.
The cheapest. Some times I notice even different sound of shots.
What can I expect out of "Federal AutoMatch Target grade Performance ammo "?
I am talking about accuracy...
Thanks,

there is no, nada, none USA made ammo that is accurate for benchrest competitions...they dropped quality control years ago, when they found out
folks went by name brands only..accurate ammo comes from england (eley)
or finland Lapua....98 out of 112 shooters in american rimfire nationals 2008
shot eley.....now that depends on your idea of accurate...federal shoots
minute of squirrel:)

$2,000 for a case of Federal? I'm guessing you misread the price tag.

It's been quite a few years since Federal made anything but plinking ammo. My advice is RUN, don't walk, away from that deal.

It's really a shame though, me and my guns of the time got along real well with the old UM1. :( That stuff was fast too, the sound was "CRACK" rather than the norm now which is more like "putt".

Not that the putt is a bad thing...

Federal/ Ammo

Federal is marketing a TARGET ammo made by RWS Tried it but is not any better than R 50 and R 50 is $4.00 a box cheaper.

Its a shame. I have always thought an American or what ever country your from class would be neat. We have actions, barrels stocks triggers scopes but no decent ammo. I guess it would make a challenge to have an American class. Sort weigh and cuss. Wouldn't need no expensive gun.

I guess I will try and answer the question you asked. I have shot a lot of the Wal-Mart Federal Auto-Match ammo. They did have a bad "lot" and Federal stood behind there product. Some of the lots seem better than others. In 50 yard practice bench shooting, me and a friend often get some good groups, but not enough of the time to shoot 200s in the 50 yard iron sight matches. I would say the group size average is 1.5 to 2.0 times the size with good match ammo. Shooting a handgun, given my lack of abilities to shoot really good groups, I would say the accuracy is just fine. Match ammo is wasted on me in handguns. Jumping beyond your question, Federal Gold Medal Ultra-Match is very fine ammo, but hard to find and very expensive. If you are starting out in benchrest rimfire, with scopes, try Eley Match (Black box), it has always shot very well for a lot of us. All trigger time is good time.

No I'm not wrong

Re: Federal ammunition

Back when I first bought my first good rimfire rifle I had tried all of the American made target ammunition. The Federal such as the Ultra Match shot well but did not have the correct bullet lube. I contaced Federal back then and they admitted to me that it was not good. It would cause a lead ring just ahead of the chamber or say in a full match barrel about where the rifling starts. I noticed rounds would chamber a bit tight after say 15-20 rounds. Winchester T22 which looks alot like the old Western Mark lll does the same CCI green tag you name it and they all have the same downfall. The Eley and Lapua and RWS ammuntion all have bullet lubes which prevent this leading to take place, is a shame they can't make Target ammunition in the US with the correct bullet lube as some of them don't shoot too bad and I would like to buy American ammunition also. The regular copper plated high speed ammunition you mentioned will not cause the lead ring, but it will not produce the results like the high quality target ammunition.

like other things made in the USA, from the lunchmeat you eat to the lawn mower you ride...the same label stays on, but the quality goes down the crapper...
other imports of ammo that in some cases shoot well are, SK JAGD, and
Wolf .... Lapua , sK jagd and i think wolf all had the same head stamp on the case..i could be wrong

That ad for Ultramatch at Midway is for a brick. Isn't there 10 brick's in a case? That's over $1600. If this is the true ultramatch that sold new 10 years ago for about $900, quite a markup on old ammo. Doesn't say if it is 1000A or 1000B so I am suspicious if is the real deal. Fact they don't tell much about it. Although many touted it as the greatest thing ever, Lapua Midas was the dominate ammo during Federals brief stint with ultramatch. That it was not dominated might have lead to its demise along with the bean counters. Also I remember some of those that bought some of the last cases were pissed that Federal had mixed lots together to make cases. Real junk. I would check that this is truly 1000a or 1000b and not mixed lots before laying out this kind of money. My own experience with Ultramatch was it leaded terribly. Rich

Their is

cheaper ammo, from them. I saw it for 96.00. But this is for one brick. I get around. I also have that Wally world Fed target ammo.. I doubt if it shoots. But it was cheap. Good for the Cricket and Marlin 100.

Federal Site

Upon checking the Federal Web site, they show UM22 as a new release for 2009. This price, puts it up there with Ten-X and Lapua Midas Plus. Now whether it shoots or not, that's where your testing sessions come in. If you have no control over Lot Numbers, it's tough to test and then buy the best.

Hi Fred, on looking at the midway ad again I see it is the UM22, not the old 1000a or 1000b. So as you say its a whole new ammo to test. Probably entirely different but using an old name. And then again can you get specific lots? That will probably only happen if someone in the target shooting sports carries it.

The new UM22 is RWS R50 with a Federal head stamp/box. Made under contract. If your rifle likes R50 its worth a try perhaps. bob finger

I tried two lots of UM22, did not shoot well for me. Tried one lot of 922, and it shot really well. I bought several bricks locally, shoots great in the 40x and several of my factory sporters. It is a little on the fast side.

Myself and a friend tried the new UM22 in three guns on Thursday. My rifles were a 40x and and 52d. These are jsut factory guns with trigger jobs and bedded actions. My friend had a Anshutz 54.18 MSR. His rilfe likes R50 and it's his favorite match ammo. Well the UM22 did not shoot as well as Wolf or SK in either of my rifles and the Anny did not like it either. This is just three guns and wto trigger pullers so your millage may vary. My firend won second place in a local BR match last week so he's no slouch. If the ammo could of shot well he would have been able to get it to do so. Donald
