I shoot in a factory gun squirrel gun match at Piney Hills once a month. We use factory sporter class rifles that can't have a bull barrel. We use the IR5050 targets. I was wondering if there was anyone else having the same shoots at their club.Iit would be nice to shoot somewhere else and see some new shooters.

Sounds interesting

What are the rules? What makes it a squirrl gun?
What is the average attendance?

Gun has to be a factory sporter or hunting rifle. The end of the barrel has to be smaller than diameter of a dime. The stock can't be flat on bottom. You can't use a 1 piece rest or a return to battery rest. Their is no weight limit and you can use whatever power scope you want. Trigger can be changed but everything else has to be as it is when it comes from factory. Most guns are1712's a few Cooper's, Winchester's and Remington's to name a few. Last shoot a guy shot a 249 17x with a 1712. There has been a few 250's shot. Pretty tough for factory guns. Most shoots have anywhere 12 to 18 shooters.

Normally we have 2 or 3 places that have weekly matches, but this has been an off year. I know it sounds crazy, but with the election and panic ammo buying frenzy, seems as many lost interest in the local matches when ammo got tougher to find back around Christmas time.

Piney gives the most organized match in the area, the other ones seem to come and go and are often less "publicized". Many of these style matches may not have appropriate insurance and licenses, which is the main reason they seem to come and go.

The funny part is most of the people that shoot the factory sporter matches at Piney, never attend the "other" matches. There is a few that do both, but for the most part there seems to be two different crowds of shooters that attend the "factory" sporter matches.

What we usually find is someone will start a match with a few buddies. A few weeks later they start having 15-30+ shooters. Usually these matches are on Friday or Saturday nights. They often start around 7 and run into the early morning hours.

Best place to find out about local matches is to hang around any gun shop that sells match ammo. When the local matches start up, many locals buy ammo locally and its the best and fastest way to find out where and when a match is being held.

Each match seems to have a slight deviation of the rules, but for the most part, the rules are as you posted. If you have never been to one, its amazing to see how accurate these factory sporters are.
