F-Class barrels

What contour and length barrel is mostly used for F/TR (.308) and Open (6.5X47 Lapua)?

Thanks - nhk

F/TR barrel profile depends on where you're looking back to.

If you have a Highpower tradition, something like a 30" light to medium palma profile barrel will work fine out to 1000 yards. Your only worry will be the weight limit & that will make your mind up between the 2 profiles. A 12 twist will let you use all the good projectiles from 155 to 185 & some 190s at useful velocities.

If you have a tac background, then the compromise between tactical standard silhouettes & lengths & the need to maybe get something accurate to 1000 yards will become a pain. Somebody else might be able to riddle that one for you.

I run a 1-7", 1.250" x 28" long .223 Rem. throated for 77, 80 & 90gr SMK's & 80 & 90 gr. VLD's also have a 1-12", 1.250-1.0" x 32" long .308 Win. in F/TR.

I use a 6mm similar to the dasher for 600 yards, 95 BIB fb, 10 twist Pennsylvania taper, and for 1000 yards I use a .25 cal similar to a Roberts Imp. 10 twist, BIB fb 110Gr, Heavy Palma. either barrel is finished at 30 inches.

Just finished a .223 for 600 yard and in using a 1-8" twist 28" medium Palma taper, have a .308 in the works for 600 yards and out, with a 1-12" twist 28" medium Palma taper.

IMO (based on personnal experience, others milage or velocity may vary) the extra 2" gains around 50-60 fps so if I hit my target velocity with a less than 30" barrel with a load that isn't running on the ragged edge I'm happy.

Open is another story for me. I very much like my 6.5 X 284 and it pushes a 139 gr Scenar to 2945 fps with no pressure signs out of a 26" barrel in heavy varmint taper with a very high degree of accuracy.

Given the much smaller case of the 6.5 X 47, you'll need as much barrel length as possible to hit 2950 or so with the 140 gr range of bullets if it can be done at all without going overpressure on the load. And the 2950 fps node seems to be the sweet spot for the 140 gr range of bulets. Couldn't tell you much about the lighter bullets in the 120 gr range, although what little experimentation I did with the 123 gr Scenars proved them to be extremely accurate with the 6.5 X 284 at shorter ranges.
