Extreme Spread

Just did a little testing with the shiny new 208 A-Max's. 300 wby 1-11 Krieger. I shot 8 three shot groups at 100. From 73 - 80 RL25. Granted, these were only three shot groups, but the worst E/S I recorded was SEVEN FPS. I had a 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, & 7 fps ES!!! The problem was that the smallest group was 3/4 inch. Up to 1 3/4 inch. Very poor, but I just weighed the powder and seated .040 less than a hard jam. The BBL was chambered for the Berger VLD seated at 3.9", so the A-Max was waaayyyy out there. Not much bullet in the neck.

I don't know where I am going with this....just thought it kind of intresting. Wondering if they are worth persuing in this tube.

Thanks,
Tod

analytically...your sample group is way too small to be significant.

with the groups that large, its just an anomoly in the testing.

it may indicate a good area of powder burn, but it soes not seem to help with that bullet.

keep testing.....i have some 208's in a 11 twist 300 win mag.....in work.

Hi Tod,

I myself load test at 600 and beyond, because I can't tell what is good and what is really good. To me it sounds like you have found the accuracy node for the powder charge. You just need to find the seating depth. The Hornady guys were saying the Amax's like to be jumped around .006, but I don't think you'll get there if your throat is long. So try a big jump and see how it will do at 600 to 1000. Peace out. :D

"area of pwder burn" ?? 8 grains is an awfull big area. :D:D

Anyway....It may be statisticlay irrelivant, but I have been shooting 3 shot groups during initial load testing on everything for six million years, and I have never seen that low of E/S over that large of a powder spread...ever....not even close.
Eight groups, eight different powder charges, all low to mid single digit E/S.

How much jump have you been using? I know I talked briefly to Joe Thielen in MN last week. He had a bunch of people rubbing up against him...that tends to happen when you kick ass at an event....not to mention he is a heck of a nice guy, and he said something about jump, but I didn't absorb an actual number. I would like to try them some more in a couple of other tubes. It will have to wait untill after the nat's.

I shoot the 208 A Max's in my 300 win mag and I have never seen my 1000 yard load shoot good groups at 100. It will beat that inch mark by quite a bit but nothing to scream about. I jump them .025 cause that is what they love in my gun at a grand.

I have also noticed some great ES and I always shoot at least 5 shot groups. But, i tend to ignore the chrono with reading that low and look to the target. If you or any of us without anything short of a Doppler think for one second that our chronos are that accurate we are just dreaming!

Back out to 1000 and shoot 5 shot groups in calm conditions...you will know pretty quick when you find that "Ballistic G-Spot". ;)

Single digits over a 8 grain wide window when the node is 2.5 grains wide sounds like a chronograph problem to me.

You could be right, but interspursed with those groups were groups from other guns (letting stuff cool), and the E/S on most of those were 20 -60 fps. It must have been a doosie of an annomaly to have 15 groups fired through the chrono and only eight of those did the chrono give false reedings, and of those eight....ALL were the same bullet/powder combo.....Wow....What are the odds??????:D:D And, the average velocity went up as the loads went up in a very uniform manner.

Don't you just love sarcasim???:D

Oh crap!!!!

Did you guys ever have one of those "OH KRAP!!!" moments? I just had one...one of those "light bulb" moments when you realize something that should have been painfully obvious. On my inital post I said I was shooting the AMAX's at 100 yards....well, I was just out at the range looking at my target backers, and realized I was shooting at 300 yards, not 100. I had my 300 and 800 yard targets lined up so I would not need to move my chrono or my rest. Just raise and lower my front rest a bit. I was testing three rifles...two at 800, and the new bullets at 300 because I had no idea about where it was going to hit. I guess the 300 yard target just looked so damn close to me, and I had done some other testing a couple of days before at 100. .....DUH!!!!! So....3/4 in to 1 3/4 inch at 300, not 100. Makes me feel WAY more positive about the test. :) Two different nodes, accuracy wise 2730 and 2835 fps. I had 5 more loads loaded up, but ran out of light, so I didn't get to shoot them. Plus I had it in my head that these were 100 yard groups and why waste my time. Just pull the damn bullets and save on stuff. I have loads already loaded up to 83G /RL25.....I think I will finish my test. I would like to get it up 3050....see if the 2950 and 3050 nodes are there....just like every other wby I have tested......

The crono results, on the other hand, are, at least for now :)o) correct. Unless, of course, I have another "LIGHT BULB" moment.

I swear....some times I think I am loosing my mind!!

Tod (I think)

:D Of all the things I've lost it, it's my mind I miss the most.

It's not just you Tod. My last light bulb moment was, Putting 35 hours into a load that wasn't shooting, just before the Mn state shoot. No wonder it wouldn't shoot, "THE EFFIN BASES ARE LOOSE".- Not just you my freind. Peace out
