Expander for Pumpkin Turner

Folks,

I read here somewhere that the K&M Expandrion can be used with a pumpkin turner.

Is that correct?

I ask because I already have 6mm, 7mm and 30 caliber Expandrions.

Maybe you read that here [from another thread]:

The K & M Expandiron usually works well with the Pumpkin turner, also.

The Pumpkin has always been considered the best, but I would also consider Sinclair's newest equipment for expanding & turning. They have done a remarkable job of appraising the shortcomings of their equipment & re-designing to get rid of previous problems. I'm not saying K & M isn't good, it does a good job, too. :)

Not to hijack your thread, Greg, but I would love to hear from anybody who is using the latest Sinclair turner. It appeared to have a similar eccentric adjustment compared to the Pumpkin. What I liked (the looks of) better about the new Sinclair, is that you can see the cut better. The Pumpkin is sort of a leap of faith so far as this issue goes, but it does such a consistently good job that you build faith pretty quickly. I still would prefer to watch the cut as it happens; it helps me to regulate my feed speed (by hand) to get the best surface finish.

So far as the Expandiron for use with the Pumpkin, it worked great for me. I have the cabide mandrel in the Pumpkin. I have ended up with several K & M mandrels over the years & find some manufacturing tolerance with them, as you would expect with most anything. So let your micrometer & the feel on the turning mandrel guide you. If needed, K & M might select a better fitting mandrel for you, but I've never asked about that. Good luck & let us hear from you after you get some experience with this.

No problem, Joe. I was hoping you would add your voice to the thread.

In case anyone is interested, I used the 7mm as an itermediate step in expanding the 6.5 Grendel case up to 30 cal (after the range officer ran me off and I couldn't fire form.) That way it was two steps: .5mm and .62mm, respectively.

Greg, you don't need to do that in two steps. Many of the 30BR crowd go all the way from 6mm to 30 in one step. I think it is easier on the brass that way, too.

My 30 Expandrion won't go in my 6.5 brass... Untill I get a way to turn it down some on the end, I have to use the intermediate step.

K & M has a mandrel that will expand all the way from 6mm up to 30 in 1 step, call them. You could modify the one you have, but the mandrels are pretty inexpensive, so I would recommend just getting the special 6mm-30 cal. mandrel.

Thanks, Guys. That's why I hang out here. Well, that and for the chuckles when Goodgrouper and Mike In Co get into it....

I bought the Sinclair a few months ago and had to do some modifications to the unit to fit my personal taste. I removed the click adjustment ( not fine enough increments). Had to decrease the size of the expander mandrel to make the fit more snug (Would not cut necks consistent). Would I buy another Sinclair, No. Now that I have the Sinclair the way I want it, I'll keep it. I do like watching the cut.

I used the K&M expander with Don's neck turner, when I broke down and got Don's expander, it was like going to power steering. Flat cuts down on muscle abuse.
