epa wants to ban lead based ammo....

Let's not be premature here. This is not a proposed rule, it is a petition to EPA by a group of citizens to create a rule or regulation. Should we be concerned and voice our opinion - certainly. But it is bit premature to say this is a government attempt to remove guns from the public. This is coming from a group of citizens that have always had the right to petition the government - as we all do.

do not be silly.......this is how rules are made in the epa....no vote by the public. or elected officials. this is the same tactic used 2 years ago to remove primers from public sales by making rules so restrictive, you would not be able to buy them...without actually banning them.
they do respond to congress who controls thier budget...so let your senators/congressmen know how you feel.

you are correct, you must make your voice heard

First off I'm not silly. I have worked for State Gov't for almost 30 years and have administered EPA's hazardous waste regulations on the State level for nearly all of that time. I think I have some idea on how rules and regulations are made. I know that elected officials have more impact on regulations and the operation of a State of Federal Agency then you think. Also. citizens and advocacy groups petition the Gov't all the time. More times then not, nothing comes of it. EPA and the NRA worked together a few years back and came up with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the best management practices for operating gun clubs regarding the management of lead. It did not become a regulation. We should always let our representatives know how we feel but this won't even be on their radar until it is published (if ever) as a proposed rule. There is always a public comment period for any proposed new regulation.

Tim,

I thought you were smarter then that. Nobody has CO2 as a toxic gas. It has been identified as a green house gas. There is nothing toxic about CO2 and it has not been identified as such by EPA or anyone else.

Blades is right, I just got an e-mail from the NRA-ILA with the following

NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS ALERT
Vol. 17, No. 34 08/27/10
EPA Denies Ammo Ban Petition

Responding to a grassroots outcry from gun owners, the Environmental Protection Agency today announced that it has denied a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity and other radical groups that had sought to ban the use of lead in ammunition.
Agreeing with the position of the NRA and the firearms industry, the agency explained in a news release that it "does not have the legal authority to regulate this type of product under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA)." Further crushing the hopes of anti-gun and anti-hunting activists, the release added: "nor is the agency seeking such authority."

Tim,

"Hazardous" and "Toxic" are not synonymous. Some Hazardous Substances/Waste are not considered "Toxic" (though most substances are toxic at some concentration) but most "Toxic Substances/Waste are also "Hazardous". I'm referring to the definitions of those terms as used in EPA's Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) program and under TSCA (Toxic Substance Control Act) Programs. I believe the EPA declared CO2 as a pollutant in order to control and regulate their emmissions. I caution about using any media outlet as a source for any scientic or techincal information. I've dealt with many reporters over the years and most just don't have the scientific background to grasp these terms or issues. So you have lots of company there. Stick to what you know.

pollutant (p-ltnt)
A substance or condition that contaminates air, water, or soil. Pollutants can be artificial substances, such as pesticides and PCBs, or naturally occurring substances, such as oil or carbon dioxide, that occur in harmful concentrations in a given environment. Heat transmitted to natural waterways through warm-water discharge from power plants and uncontained radioactivity from nuclear wastes are also considered pollutants.
