Energy limit - US BR shooters

I believe all you guys shoot BR unlimited energy in the US and have to turn your rifles down to the 20fpe limit for the HV-B class.

If you could choose your energy limit - what would be ideal, 28fpe, 32fpe or 40fpe?

In South Africa we shoot 50m grouping with no energy limit. I shoot this class with a 32fpe Rapid (18.1gr at 900f/sec). IMO 28 - 32fpe limit is ideal.

I like 33flb best But I don't like any limit on anybody.I'ts run what You brung in America nuff said.....Franky

I have found around 32-33 fpe with .22 JSB's to be about right. when I went up to around 1000fps, the accuracy was'nt quite so good with 18.1gr as when speed was cut down to 920fps. I have seen good results from 800-950fps with .22, but feel my gun is pretty good overall at 900fps. Our club shoots 30 record shots per card, and refilling is not allowed during a relay, so the shot count per charge is a consideration, esp since my gun is not regulated.

We have a 100m (109 yards) indoor range at our club. Some shooters manage sub 1" ten shot groups at 100m. This is my best 10 shot group at 100m indoors shot at 32-33fpe.

Very nice group, and I guess we're all in agreement as to the energy level.

sub-20mm for TEN shots is fantastic!

We have a 100m (109 yards) indoor range at our club. Some shooters manage sub 1" ten shot groups at 100m. This is my best 10 shot group at 100m indoors shot at 32-33fpe.

I know there are lots of folks that have shot really fine five-shot groups at 100yds and beyond, but to put ten shots into under .8" at 109yards is a real accomplishment!

I have only shot a long range indoors once, and it was a disaster, as it was an indoor firing range with huge air mover fans that created worse breezes than outdoors!

My best 100yds+ airgun effort was done at dusk on day when I put a hasty five shots into just over 9/16" ... but I've never even tried ten shot groups at long range, because I haven't been all that happy with even my five shotters! I have a lot of wind at my place, and its rare to see conditions good enough for even sub 2" shooting.

BTW, what kind of gun are you using?

For long range I shoot my Theoben Rapid MkII (.22) unregulated and use AA 18.1gr.

Thank you Dave & therealld - guess it helps if you have a 100m indoor range at your club. This is our indoor range.

Ammion,
This Winter we are shooting indoors at 25 meters to get our guns shooting at less than 20 FPE. It is cramped to get 25 meters. Three people shoot Theobens, Two FX Royal, One FX Independance, One Walther and one M-Rod.

Will see how we do outside at 25 meters in Jan. Might need snowshoes to post the targets.
Great shooting at 100 meters.

Paul, good to hear we might see a few Theoben's at the WRABF event in the HV-B class next year.

Gert van Wyk and myself shoot this 20fpe class (HV-B) with Theoben MFR's in the SA league - we both hope to qualify for the WRABF event next year.

We shoot the 25m 12fpe (LV), 15fpe (HV-A) & 20fpe (HV-B) classes in South Africa. In addition to these WRABF classes we shoot 50m grouping unlimited fpe (5 x 5 shot groups) for an average group size.

IMO the 12fpe (LV) & 15fpe (HV-A) classes are very close and I'll prefer the 15fpe class to be replaced by a unlimited class (or a 28 - 33fpe limit).

To have the following classes:

LV (12fpe) with 10.5 pound weight limit. For UK and European countries with energy restrictions.
HV-A (20fpe)
HV-B (unlimited fpe or 28-33fpe limit). This rifle can be used for a 50m grouping class as well.

Any comments regarding this?

I'm curious about your 5x5 50m group shoots. What is a good average size and do you have record size?
Thanks,
Dan

Yes, I think the 15fpe class could be replaced by a 33 fpe class and develop a LOT of enthusiasm, ESP if it were to happen this year! I think going much higher than 33fpe might be counterproductive, since the competition might become nearly meaningless at the close range, assuming the sort of developement I would anticipate.

I agree with your thoughts. I have yet to see a 15 fpe air rifle. Everybody in SA use their 12 fpe rifle to shoot the heavy varmint-A discipline. So what it then boils down to is that we actually shoot light varmint twice at our competitions.

15 fpe is an orphan and it will probably remain as such. The suggestion that an 33 fpe or even an unlimited discipline (at 50 meters?) be brought in will strengthen BR as it will interest shooters who at the present time are not catered for in BR. I don't see it happening soon but lets get the ball rolling and hope that it become a discussion point at the next World Shoot.

Dan, all depend on conditions. I think a average of less than 12.5mm (0.5") is good.

My personal best is a average of 9.728mm (0.383") for the 5 groups.

That is pretty good. I think this is my best 5 shot 6 group string at 50 yards.

Dan, excellent shooting!

I love the 50m grouping event, wish the WRBF will adopt it so we have it standarized. Even if its 50 yards, I know there are a few countries that shoot a 50m/y grouping event.

I too love the longer range group shooting. Unfortunately, it would be a huge and costly undertaking to move my backstop back far enough to comply with fifty meters.

Energy limit-US BR shooters

The BR has a lot going for it--while it is not the fastest cartridge it is fast enough and very efficient.
