Eley Match EPS Black Box

Yes I have noticed it on all the latest Match Eley. Have no idea what it does to accuracy. I'm sure it can't help.

That mark is on both lots of EPS Black Box that I have been testing.

Not on any of the Tenex I have laying around.
 
We noticed the same thing on most all the 2006 and 2007 lots, in Black box and Tenex. Kinda looked like something(maybe a ring of lead) was stuck in one side of the die? Most of the 2007 lots has lots of lube on the points so it wasn't noticeable unless you rubbed the lube off the nose. The ammo seemed to shoot well in spite of it. A perfect bullet base is probably more important, and should make up for the little imperfections in the nose.
I've been planning on running a test by deliberately damaging the noses on known good shooting ammo and recording group sizes on damaged nosed ammo versus undamaged nosed ammo, the weather just hasn't cooperated lately.

I just received yesterday a case and a half of Eley Match EPS 1007-01*** , after reading this I opened a box and it looks exactly the same way. I sure hope it is not a problems.....cause I'm have high hopes and am counting on this ammo for the upcoming season.

I shot a 249-22X practice IR5050 target with ammo that had similar looking tips. That was with my BR sporter and a 6X scope. The shot I missed was not the fault of the ammo. It was my last shot, and the wind just picked up a bit as I let off the shot. While it'd be nice if all the ammo looked perfect, it doesn't seem to hurt the accuracy.

I feel pretty good about this stuff....I had 8 test lots and last Saturday the weather got into the 50s and we had some wind.

I put the wind flags out but just shot groups just to see how much variations I got in the wind and there were a 2 lots that shot close to the same. All staying within a 100 on an ARA target.

Again I just used the same holding just inside the 100 ring and fired an ARA target paying no real attention to the flags and shot a 2100 with one lot and a 2250 with the other, that helped me make the decision on which lot to buy.

I had some real good stuff last year and I think this will be as good. But you know how it is testing ammo....testing this time of year it may not do as well as we hope when summer comes around.

I wish you the best of luck! I'd bet if the ammo shot that well in the 50 degree range, it'll do well in the 70's too. I know how it is testing because I used to test a lot, not so much any more. The Eley ammo has gotten a lot better over the past few years. Sometimes it's so good it makes it hard to pick a "best" from the batch, and that's a good thing!

Seems this is an intermittent manufacturing fault that has been around for a while, and although it would be better if it was not there, it doesn’t seem to affect the flight of the bullet.

I have tested some of the EPS against “perfect” Tenex and found the Tenex did group smaller, however it’s possible the Annie is like my wife and likes expensive things (not that either always get what they want).

The dealer has returned the last batch of EPS to Eley, pointed out the fault and they have promised to do some accuracy tests so we will see what happens. I have a test day booked at Eley in March (can’t get in any sooner for all the Olympic hopefuls) so I’ll save a box or two and try it on their test rig for myself.

Anyway, all this testing is for the World Championships in July/August, I hope we are going to see plenty of you guys out there, I’m looking forward to seeing all those Turbo actions/Lija barells/Calfee’s

A few weeks ago my local gun shop had boxes of each kind of the black box EPS ammo. The funny part was the names was the same, but the photo on the box was differant for the regular round nose and dimple nose.

I have been using the dimple style like you posted photos of and found no decrease in accuracy.

But when rim gauging them, I did find a few that had rim thickness much smaller than the normal of eley bullets.
 
I have found this on several boxes of the last batch (1006) of EPS I bought, it was most prevelent in the boxes were the tray holding the bullets slipped past the stops in the box letting the nose of the bullets hit the bottom of the box. Poor design. Weather this is shipping damage or packing defect from the factory is hard to determine but the design is faulty in either case. Since
I don't have a consentricity gauge to test and see if the bullet has been pushed out of alignment I set them aside for fowlers.

This question is not related to the thread and hope it dont comprimise the thread.

How do EPS Black box and Match EPS-blue label with American flag on it compare?? Blue label states "official ammo supplier for the USA shooting teams"
 
No differance

They are exactly the same. The difference is monetary. Eley makes a donation to the Olympics for every box sold that has that quote on it. At least, that's the way it was splained to me.
 
I'm just now trying to get started shooting again so I'm no authority although I think the shape of the tip on this Eley is intentional and is related to the change they made in it being the EPS......
